φέρνω / ρίχνω / πιάνω (κάποιον) στο φιλότιμο

Άλλα δυο από το καλάθι των αχρήστων, ίσως; (probably already rejected?) - fair play and better nature. Appeal to someone's better nature/sense of fair play (along the lines of nickel's sense of honour)? Definition of better nature. : the more virtuous, amiable, or kindly instincts of a person...

    πράκτορας κύρους

More guesswork ... (some context would be useful). Another possibility - "authoritative agent"? .. who is perhaps someone with the authority or who has been given the authority or (more importantly perhaps) is considered an authority - an expert - maybe unquestionably so (who can interpret the...

Yes, I thought as much. Just thought I better kick the tyres (all the same) and look under the hood to make sure. I appreciate your help (and nickel's) :)

    on behalf of

"On behalf of myself" sounds somewhat stilted, too(and unnecessary), as the speech is in the first person (in the given example) - I mean, who else would you be speaking on behalf of (apart from your wife)? - but I think it's necessary. You're right. "On behalf of my wife, also"?

    on behalf of

If a speech is delivered in the first person and on behalf of others, where it would be reasonable to expect that the speaker is also speaking on their own behalf (see example below), is it safe to assume that it would be interpreted in this way? - would the speaker still need to explicitly...

Point taken and sorry (for the answer and the turn this discussion took - my part in it - and I apologise to Lina too) - pontios (by name and by nature). Group hug time. :) It's a useful rule to keep in mind.

Thanks, SBE. You've made me stop and think about this. My instincts are telling me ..working with your examples. Yes to dissertation topic over dissertation's topic. And to office lobby over office's lobby - but for some reason I'd be equally happy with "building's lobby" or building lobby...

Maybe formally —you could be right? (it never really occurred to me until you pointed it out) το "subject's topic" το βρίσκεις λάθος; (επισήμως μπορεί να είναι; ) or "subject's essence" or "substance's physical properties" ?

    reflect on

Υπό την ακόλουθη έννοια, νομίζω: (σωστά την ερμήνευσες - "σκέφτομαι" ή "αναλογίζομαι") "reflect on something also reflect upon something: to think seriously about something Her essay invites the reader to reflect on the importance of art in people's lives". "Consider or think carefully about."...

tracking powder = (a) προσκολλώμενη σκόνη (b) (παλ.) σκόνη ιχνηλάτησης

Interesting, cougr and nickel. Re: "Tracking powder" vs "tracking in" of the powder discussion -- I'm now wondering whether the term "tracking powder" more aptly refers to (and describes) the placing of the powder along a known rodent track or trail, than to the powder being subsequently...

tracking powder = (a) προσκολλώμενη σκόνη (b) (παλ.) σκόνη ιχνηλάτησης

Actually, carry in (κουβαλώ) = transferred - so nickel is right too. My mistake. Thanks, Palavra - I just read your post. Ποτέ δεν επιμένω, απλώς ρώτησα αν θα ταίριαζε το πασαλειβω - για το track in (the rat is transferring the powder onto itself - which is likened to dirt being...

tracking powder = (a) προσκολλώμενη σκόνη (b) (παλ.) σκόνη ιχνηλάτησης

Yes, but the powder is transferred onto the rat first (via contact). Isn't it? Καλό νομίζω. It describes the process, at least - how the powder gets to be on the rat. "tracked-in" dirt/mud is the same as "walked-in" dirt/mud - i.e. dirt that's been "walked into" a house; that's been brought...

tracking powder = (a) προσκολλώμενη σκόνη (b) (παλ.) σκόνη ιχνηλάτησης

    I realise we're translating "tracking powder", but ... Πιο γενικά (for "track something in" - the titled query): πασαλείβω/πασαλείβομαι με (κάτι); .. αλλά θα ταίριαζε αν αυτό (το κάτι) έχει τη μορφή σκόνης - ίσως εξαρτάται από τη σκόνη (if it smears or leaves a mark) ;

    shatterproof

Καλά κάνατε - Sometimes I have nothing better to do than to post (and I got carried away once again). I come here to learn from you, not to teach you guys. I don't use social media and I've tended to overcompensate for this on here from time to time (it still doesn't excuse it). Anyway...

    shatterproof

I meant ευσύντριπτος (without the theta) as a possible neologism... but the more I think about it, the more I doubt myself - as ασύντριπτος sounds more like something that hasn't been crushed or broken - that escaped being broken or crushed (or ground)? Shattering is a violent and...

o ασύντριπτος (και ευσθυντριπτος for shatterable) δεν θα ταίριαζε καλύτερα; δεν ξέρω, απλώς ρωτάω - αλλά, μπορεί να ταιριάζει (περισσότερο) ή να συγχέεται με το uncrushable (methinks - in English); o εύθρυπτος μου ακούγεται σαν το friable/crumbly .. δηλαδή για κάτι μαλακό; to my untrained eye/ear

The feats of Daskalogiannis and his brave Cretans

I knew I was drawing a long bow - I thought "τα Βαλη" may have been derived from "βάλω" as in "βάλω εναντίον", that's all - and referred to the determined/committed ( Sfakians) - τω Σφακιω τα Βαλη.. the determined/committed from Sfakia.
