    I don't know offhand

    Additionally, maybe .. for offhand? (m_a_a_ .. good post, by the way) στα πεταχτά;? (I've added an extra question mark) με την πρώτη; στα πρόχειρα;

The feats of Daskalogiannis and his brave Cretans

Another possibility to be considered (even if only to be rejected)? τα βάλη = the committed/the determined (defenders/fighters) = εκείνοι που "βάλθηκαν" να πολεμήσουν (those who were committed to fighting/dedicated themselves to fighting/set about fighting/defending?); τω Σφακιώ τα βάλη = the...

    put in the hard miles

Keep the interesting queries coming - I'm learning something alongside you, Theseus. Glad to help (if I can here and there), and I'm sure I'm speaking on behalf of cougr (my fellow Melbournian/Melburnian)when I say you're welcome. .

    put in the hard miles

Theseus, until something better comes along (I was waiting for someone else to respond)... and I get blown out of the water. put in the hard yards (which I'm more familiar with and which may or may not have the exact same meaning as "put in the hard miles"? - it probably does?) βάλε τα δυνατά...

    put in the hard miles

And someone who has paid their dues and earned their right to succeed would have presumably "put in the hard yards"? Maybe by "hard miles" the surgeon was suggesting to "go hard", i.e., the opposite of "junk miles" (taking it easy/going slow, which might not bring the same benefits)?

    put in the hard miles

There's a similar (sounding) idiom .... ... "do the hard yards" or "put in the hard yards" (see the definition below) The "hard yards" idiom is commonly used in Australia. I'm not sure about the UK? I know "hard yards" is a commonly used term .. hard yards plural noun. a great deal of effort or...

παίζουμε τις κουμπάρες = a game of make-believe, (a game of) dress-up | kidding each other; playing (silly) games

As long as the genre of the game (parlour game, party game, etc..) is "fantasy", of course. We're not (kids) playing a/some fantasy (or virtual reality or simulation or computer?) game, the future of a nation is being decided. This is not some fantasy game we played as kids ... ("Computer...

παίζουμε τις κουμπάρες = a game of make-believe, (a game of) dress-up | kidding each other; playing (silly) games

I wish I had seen this before opening my trap ... I didn't realise it had to do with (as Tsipras sees it) the continual shifting of the goalposts and more absurd/unrealistic last-minute demands by creditors - this is not a game of make-believe (that we played as kids), it affects the future of...

παίζουμε τις κουμπάρες = a game of make-believe, (a game of) dress-up | kidding each other; playing (silly) games

At the risk of flogging a dead horse ... :) playing (silly) games, I agree with - and "silliness" should be "front and centre" here - but I think it stops a little short of what Tsipras was implying, which is closer to "playing childish games" (IMHO). "Childish" connotes not only "silliness"...

Σας ευχαριστώ όλους. Δεν ξέρω αν το κατάλαβα, εντελώς .. αλλά κάτι προσκόμισα από αυτό, νομίζω. Sounds fair and reasonable, nickel - I'm sure you'd be excellent company and a font/fount of knowledge and occasionally be treated for what you bring to the table (which is worth far more than...

παίζουμε τις κουμπάρες = a game of make-believe, (a game of) dress-up | kidding each other; playing (silly) games

I didn't know this about the Greek phrase specifically, but ... There would be several layers and varying degrees of deception and fooling around/clowning around/pretence/ hoodwinking in all this (play-acting/make-believe, etc..) .. so I'm not surprised to see it extending to shenanigans/sexual...

I could have thrown "childish or puerile" in there too ...... childish antics, childish games, puerile behaviour, juvenile/infantile behaviour etc... Also... "Party games" are for kids ... We will not tolerate party games being played at the expense of .....?

There's "play acting" too - we might not need to specify what exactly it is that we're engaging in? We won't tolerate any more tomfoolery/antics/games/posturing/play-acting/faking/acting fake/make-believe/ farcical behaviour/clowning around/kidding around... it's time to get real/it's time for...

Σας ευχαριστώ αμφότερους. Αυτό που επισημαίνεται σχετικά με τα ρήματα στην παθητική φωνή θα πρέπει να λάβω υπόψη μου από τώρα και στο εξής. Για το transient element (usually element and not substance) τότε - δεν ξέρω αν ταιριάζει το παροδικό στοιχείο; Μάλλον αυτό θα είναι - there are plenty of...

Not that I'll ever be using these terms (that's if they do indeed exist - more than likely it's specious reasoning on my part resulting in nonsense)... but just curious. ο παραβαίνων, ο μεταβαίνων νομίζω υπάρχουν (ίσως ως δυσνόητοι όροι) ... αλλά, ήθελα να ξέρω για το μεταβαινόμενος (its...
