Thanks, Duke. I have met these variations in many songs. It has been pointed out by several colleagues that στίχοι.info has often inaccurate texts. I have found κιθάρα better but many of the versions of songs found there are abbreviated. For instance. Κυκλάμινο, κυκλάμινο in several versions...

Τhanks to all for their help and comments. I have one or two queries: I heard κρύβεται but I entered the version from kithara http://kithara.to/ss.php?id=MTk4ODE2MjI0. Presumably κρύβεται απάνω του means 'she snuggles up to him'. I'll have a go later at translating

Another beautiful song I've come across, sung by the incomparable

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

An English composer that, like the poet whom we have been considering, opens the gaps between the divine and the human. Both the composer and the poet seem to me to show that our lives become meaningless unless the "mists of contemporary banality" are penetrated and the idea of the sacred is...

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

Another poem:- Αναβάφτιση Renewal-Regeneration Λόγια φτωχά βαφτίζονται στην πίκρα και στο κλάιμα βγάζουν φτερά και πέτονται πουλιά και κελαηδάνε Και κειος ο λόγος ο κρυφός της λευτεριάς ο λόγος αντίς φτερά βγάζει σπαθιά και σκίζει τους αγέρες Poor words are baptised In bitterness and...

I am humbled by your praise, Earion. Thank you.

A mannerless and uncivilised man. We are not all like him! Thanks, SBE :)

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

Αυγή Στίχοι: Γιάννης Ρίτσος Λιόχαρη μεγαλόχαρη της άνοιξης αυγούλα και που ’χει μάτια να σε ιδεί να σε καλωσορίσει Δυο κάρβουνα στο θυμιατό και δυο κουκιά λιβάνι κι ένας σταυρός από καπνιά στ’ ανώφλι της πατρίδας Sun-filled, full of grace, Spring Sunrise and where are the eyes to see you...

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

Please emend the last line to: I have gathered the lifeblood, drop by drop....:)

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

Thanks, 'Man for the very useful link. Etymologically, the word from which μαντίλι is derived has several different forms: mantēle (mantīle), is, n., and mantēlĭum (mantīlĭum), ii, n. manus and tēla, properly a cloth for the hand, a towel, napkin.

My sister who is now an emeritus professor of Constitutional Law, was annoyed by a male colleague who opened his lecture with the words "Gentlemen and girls". The young women were supposed to shrug this off but my sister received several hundred complaints when she opened her lectures with the...

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

My translation (some versions have κυκλαδικό, κυκλάμινο, which is clearly wrong, spoils the doublet & and there is then a clash of accentual stress): Conversation with a flower "Cyclamen, cyclamen in the crevice of the rock where did you find colours for flowering, and where a stem for...

I have many good dictionaries and I went through the meanings, until I found what I thought was the appropriate one. Στρώνω had many such possible meanings: see http://www.wordreference.com/gren/στρώνω and, of course, Pórtal, the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek, as quoted from above. 'Man...

Thanks, SBE. Does στρώνω here mean what I suggested. It is an odd word to me in this conτext.
  15. Theseus

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

Thanks so much, SBE. I can now go over it again with more confidence. BTW, like you , I have had the dubious privilege of marking school homework and exams at all levels, sometimes work extensively indebted to google without the use of quotation marks. In so many cases the days are gone in...

So 'grandad's ""ledgers'"' mean in effect 'grandad's notes' on how to deal with a woman? There seems to be nothing remotely funny about any violence against anyone, let alone women. Thanks for your note, SBE.
  17. Theseus

In this peculiar song the above puzzling sentence occurs about 'ledgers' with one or two other minor points: Ο Νικολάκης Σ’ το ’πα Νικολάκη, στο ξανάπα σ’ το ’πα Νικολάκη δε μ’ ακούς οι γυναίκες θέλουν, θέλουνε και φάπα [a punch, blow] για να μην μας λένε μαλακούς.

Areti Ketime lavishes praise on Mikis Theodorakis

I'm getting a bit better at understanding many words but it's the general drift I don't get, as in the lead-up to these two songs in the interpretation by Areti Ketime: As and when someone can...:)

  20. Theseus

A quick question! Presumably here φτου has a positive meaning like 'whew' or 'wow'?;) Another point:- Άρχισαν τα όργανα το παλιό ντερβίσικο να μη μου το χόρευες θα 'τανε αφύσικο Does να here simply mean 'look! Don't dance it for me' or 'you shouldn't be danciing it for me'?
