    μου θες και

Thanks, Pontios. I think that's what I was getting at with "I ask you!" Presumably you are translating παιδεύω as "pawing" (or "tormenting", "pestering").:)

    μου θες και

Hi, Earion! It is also called "the dative of advantage or disadvantage" in English! That matches your terms. It was reasonably common, as I said above, in Shakespeare's time. When we were learning Greek and Latin, we had to say in class when we were translating, the words "to my advantage/to my...

    μου θες και

Thanks for all three contributions! So the θες is the main element and the μου a kind of "ethic dative", used in Latin and the English of Shakespeare's time, showing and "a certain interest felt by the person indicated". My Latin grammar describes it thus: "The weakest form of the Dative is...

    μου θες και

Neikos was kind enough to translate this sentence for me: — Πώς βγαίνεις έτσι μωρή πατσάβρα, μου θες και ρακέτες με την κυτταρίτιδα. Look at you, you old bag, playing rackets at the beach with all that cellulite. It is a very difficult idiom. Can a literal translation be made? I couldn't...

Help with a verse from Kavvadias

On my walk this afternoon with the dog exactly the same thought occurred to me as to Hellegennes in the link that Nickel referred me to, which I've just read: I think Kavvadias means "the Picasso with the bull in it snorted heavily/violently", an obvious reference in this context specifically to...

Help with a verse from Kavvadias

In the verse before this, δηλ. Του ταύρου ο Πικάσο ρουθούνιζε βαριά και στα κουβέλια τότε σάπιζε το μέλι τραβέρσο ανάποδο, πορεία προς το βοριά τράβα μπροστά, ξοπίσω εμείς και μη σε μέλει I have found a translation into English by Simon Darragh from the book 'Wireless Operator', which runs as...

Help with a verse from Kavvadias

Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ, όπως πάντα, Νείκο. Όλο το ποίημα είναι αρκετά δύσκολο μα τώρα νομίζω πως γενικά το κατάλαβα. :)

Help with a verse from Kavvadias

Thanks, Sarant. So 'when they brought you, my gipsy, wrapped in a head scarf.' Isn't the head scarf typical of gypsies?

Help with a verse from Kavvadias

In this verse by Federico Garcia Lorca (Kavvadias), I need some help:- Κάτω απ’ τον ήλιο αναγαλλιάζαν οι ελιές Beneath the sun the olives rejoiced Και φύτρωναν μικροί σταυροί στα περιβόλια and little crosses were growing in the garden Τις νύχτες στέρφες απόμεναν οι αγκαλιές During the sterile...

    angels' share (whisky technical term)

Θεγξ και τους δυο σας! Έπρεπε να το είχα παρατηρήσει πως 'πως' ήταν άτονο και ζήτω συγγνώμη για την αμάθεια μου της ιδιωματικής χρήσης του 'όλο'. Δικό μου λάθος.....:(

Thanks, 'Man, for this help. I liked the song and also the 'demonic' alterations:- του Δαίμανου μερτικό.:)

    angels' share (whisky technical term)

I'm sorry, Earion. I almost never watch any films: pardon my ignorance on this score. Now translate for me 'the devil's cut'. Perhaps το κομμάτι του διαβόλου. "Το μερίδιο των αγγέλων" Θα είναι όλοι εκεί, το ξέρω Everyone will be there, I know it, ανακατεμένοι και σε τυχαία σειρά...

    angels' share (whisky technical term)

The Angels' share is, for obvious reasons, the amount of alcohol which evaporates from the casks during maturation. This can be around 2% per year but much higher in hotter countries such as America. Is there a parallel term in Greek? I know it's a long shot to ask but there may be a technical...

πότισα (Στου κόσμου την ανηφοριά του Νίκου Γκάτσου)

I'm referring to his paperback Greek and English Proverbs (Corfu 1999). I hadn't realised that in 2015 he had is Greek and English Proverbs published in hardback. And if it is the same book, the price is indeed exorbitant. There is no trace of the availability of the book on Amazon.co.uk. I've...

πότισα (Στου κόσμου την ανηφοριά του Νίκου Γκάτσου)

Thanks, Sarant! I'm still working on proverbs and idioms. Most idioms with τη are often difficult to understand-- τη βάψαμε, την κοπανάω and the like. Proverbs I find much easier to relate to. There is a great deal of help on these, like my good friend, Professor Panos Karagiorgos's, collection.

πότισα (Στου κόσμου την ανηφοριά του Νίκου Γκάτσου)

In this stanza from the above lyrics: Πήρα δροσιά και πότισα τα μαραμένα στήθη μόνο η καρδιά που ρώτησα ποτέ δε μ’ αποκρίθη. Does πότισα mean "I gave the dew to/ I watered the withered breasts"? I'm working through the Ballad of Mauthausen and six other songs from Farantouri's cycle, like...

Words written by Mikis Theodorakis on Myrto Altinoglu

'Sudden flashes' immediately makes me think of "lightning" or of "brilliance" (μτφ.). You can talk of eyes "flashing". Here I think, since he talks of her childish [i'd prefer 'childlike'] eyes, the sudden λάμψεις are those sudden sparkles of innocent intuition and surprie, so appealing but so...

Thanks so much, Duke. It is hard to translate λάμψεις in the above context: 'sparkles/sparkle'?:(

Words written by Mikis Theodorakis on Myrto Altinoglu

Me too! This is what he said about death and his wife: “Εγώ δε τον φοβάμαι το θάνατο, αλλά... το πρόβλημά μου είναι η Μυρτώ... τίποτα άλλο. Δε μπορώ να την αφήσω μόνη. Εάν πάλι η Μυρτώ φύγει πρώτη, πάλι δεν μπορώ να ζήσω μόνος... είναι πολύ το δέσιμο... πάρα πολύ.”
