    να συνεταιριστούμε;

    Καλημέρα ! Πως θα μεταφράζατε αυτή την πρόταση; .. Δηλαδή, δεν θέλεις χρήματα για να συνεταιριστούμε; Τα συμφραζόμενα - ένας εύπορος επιχειρηματίας έχει προσφέρει σ'έναν απένταρο φίλο του την ευκαιρία να γίνει συνεταίρος σε μια κερδοφόρα επιχείρηση του. Είναι δηλαδή η απορία που εκφράζει...

    quite amusing

    Hi there, George. Κατάλαβα περίπου τι ψάχνεις. The new book ... has some eye-popping, sometimes amusing details of the mission that killed Obama. Eye-popping ισοδυναμεί, κάπως, με το "mind boggling", η "astounding", η "surprising". So eye-popping details = καταπληκτικές λεπτομέρειες. (Our...

    quite amusing

    Για να ξεφύγουμε από αυτό το αδιέξοδο(τους υπαινιγμούς/τις αποχρώσεις του χιούμορ κτλ), σκέφτηκα ότι ίσως θα πρέπει να επιτρέψουμε στους εαυτούς μας μια μικρή ποιητική άδεια (όσον άφορα τη μετάφραση), τι νομίζετε; Τέλος πάντων, με το πλεονέκτημα της ελεύθερης σκέψης : amusing = fascinating...

    Έχεις δίκιο, τώρα που το σκέφτομαι, σχετικά με το ¨κάπως¨. Good night and I hope all the dads get served breakfast in bed this weekend !

    quite amusing

    I see a distinction between 1 and 2, below ( but I understand what you're getting at). 1, You're quite right = you're "very"(or absolutely) right, so there's no doubt here. "Rightness" doesn't come in degrees, as we're either right or wrong. 2, Something is quite interesting = something is...

    quite amusing

    Δηλαδή πρέπει να παρακάμψουμε όλα τα εξής επιρρήματα - "βασικά", "σχετικά", "κάπως", "κάμποσο" = και να πάμε ίσα στο "πολύ" με ένα μεγάλο διασκελισμό, για να αποφύγουμε παρεξηγήσεις ;

    quite amusing

    Hi GeorgeA. It would be reasonable to conclude that "quite" equates to "very", based on your source (probably dictionary.com ?), and from what you've said (your very well constructed post) ; but from my experience "quite" (as in the given example, "quite amusing") more often than not, means...

    ποταμίνιο = έλεγχος για τη διαπίστωση αβαριών

    Νομiζω το πέτυχες ! A google translation, of the following sentence I just spotted (from Croation to English), provides the "smoking gun". Policijski istražitelj commissario Brunetti morao je riješiti skandalozni slučaj koji je potamnio ugled njegova grada, Venecije A police detective...

    ποταμίνιο = έλεγχος για τη διαπίστωση αβαριών

    Πολύ σωστά ! Παρεμπιπτόντως, αμφιταλαντευόμουν μεταξύ ποτό (pota/hence the "concoction"/ or "μαγείρεμα" - loosely speaking - metaphor) και το κλάδεμα (potare = to prune - in Italian ) - δηλαδή μπορεί και να αναφέρει σε μια μικρή διαμόρφωση (ύπουλο κλάδεμα) της αλήθειας ή της αληθοφάνειας ; So...

    ποταμίνιο = έλεγχος για τη διαπίστωση αβαριών

    Ας προσθέσω την βλακεία μου. :confused: Στα Λατινικά - pota (drink) + minio (small) is a small mixed drink, a concoction. A concoction = a fabrication (παρασκεύασμα) or a lie, scheme (metaphorically speaking) ; σκευωρία. Δηλαδή μπορεί να αναφέρει σε ασήμαντες/μικρές σκευωρίες ; (Small...

    Sentence 1

    Thanks, Jacqueline. Thank you, everyone. I'll eventually get it ; I've never had to think about punctuation until now. So my punctuation was both intuitive and instinctive ; unfortunately, I guess my instincts weren't up to scratch and my intuition was out of whack. .. and thanks, nickel ! :inno:

    Sentence 1

    Sentence 1

    Good morning. I would appreciate some help again, please. :confused: Which of the following versions gets the nod ? (I've entitled this "Sentence 1", as I'll be posting and querying other sentences in the future, from time to time). 1. It was the first time since he had arrived in Brazil...

    How does this sentence sound to you ?

    Sorry, you're right of course Nick and I'll try to be more careful in the future. It is simple and it was my first choice, but I can't get past the fact that it's a flawed sentence and that I sensed it as such. He decided, there and then, that merchandising would offer him the best chance to...

    How does this sentence sound to you ?

    Actually, I don't like the two "thats", at the start of the sentence, so I've reverted to "there and then". So now it's set in stone : :blush: (granite, not sandstone this time) He decided, there and then, that he would throw himself into merchandising for the duration of the Occupation, to...

    How does this sentence sound to you ?

    Very well, then ; let's hope the punctuation is right. With a drum roll, fanfare. ticker-tape parade, salvo, plus "Ode to Joy" playing in the background, followed by a sigh of relief ; our peripatetic journey is officially over and here it is, set in stone : He decided, that very evening, that...

    How does this sentence sound to you ?

    Thank you Jacqueline and I actually realised that, but it was too late to edit (at that stage). It makes perfect sense that "during the Occupation" should directly follow merchandising, without the comma, as it's part of the same clause.
