    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

Like Sherlock Holmes’s a “three-pipe problem” in "The Red-Headed League" (1891), requiring an interval of quiet, creative thought. I first came across the phrase in the thread φέρνω / ρίχνω / πιάνω (κάποιον) στο φιλότιμο by Nickel, #4 by Sarant: Πολύ ενδιαφέρον, αν και η τελευταία παράγραφος ή...

It just took me a little while to find a suitable alternative

I always value your judgement, Earion. Thank you. I was tempted to put πλείων for ούκ ὀλίγος i.e.quite long/rather long. What would it be in Modern Greek?
  3. Theseus

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

What does this phrase mean? It appears in the Λεξικό της Νέας Ελληνικής but the meaning is not given. It seems to be a reasonably common phrase. :)

One obscure Greek word in a cartoon--κον

Thanks, Duke. As I said, I've never come across it before.:)
  5. Theseus

One obscure Greek word in a cartoon--κον

I don't understand one small Greek word in this cartoon. It looks like κον. The meaning of the rest is obvious:-. Am I right or is it a more obvious word I'm missing? Is it perhaps καν with the meaning καθόλου or some such word but I haven't come across it before.

It just took me a little while to find a suitable alternative

Can I ask for help on a point of English usage? In the above sentence, requiring translation into Ancient Greek. A submission from one of the specialists was οὐκ ἐδεήθην χρόνου πρὸς εὕρεσιν ἄλλου τινὸς ἐπιτηδείου [= I needed no time to find another alternative]. This rendering was modelled on a...

    Thanks, 'Man.:)
  9. Theseus

    Cypriot Greek dialect sentence

    You are too modest, 'Man! Thank you so much, as always. :) :). Is there a difference between κεφαλόπονο & πονοκέφαλο;
  10. Theseus

    δαύτος

Wow! Thanks for all this trouble taken on my behalf. Βικιλεξικό clearly chose a misleading, if not unhelpful example sentence. What is the dialect of some of the spoken material in the book? Thanks again to Themis for the context!:)

    Cypriot Greek dialect sentence

Here is an amusing legend from Kypros with sentences in bold I don't quite understand:- Οι παθκιές του μαύρου Στη Σιά υπάρχει μια τοποθεσία, που ονομάζεται «παθκιές του μαύρου» ή «του καλικάντζαρου». Στην τοποθεσία αυτή διακρίνονται μερικά βαθουλώματα σαν πατιές. Οι χωρικοί διηγούνται γι’αυτόν...

    Hair-shirt, muesli-eating Guardian readers.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. What quite does ευαισθησιάρηδες mean? 'The hypersensitive brigade'? 'The arty-farty types'? I'm looking for a good translation of this seemingly rare word. Thanks! :)
  13. Theseus

    Hair-shirt, muesli-eating Guardian readers.

In a speech at the U.K. General Election, Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat Leader, said about climate change: “'If it is simply for hair-shirt, muesli-eating Guardian readers to solve climate change, it ain’t going to solve the problem. We’re all stuffed ... we can make ourselves energy...

    Thanks, Nickel.

    Eux, Εάριων! :)
  16. Theseus

    δαύτος

Thank you for the time & effort taken on my behalf, SBE. I couldn't translate any of the examples! :(
  17. Theseus

    covfefe

Thanks, SBE. I can now find my way around the various points of discussion. The point about Koutsogiorgas's use of pseudo-katharevousa was very helpful; so I suppose that the translation of the sentence that is in question is 'you are not justified in speaking'. :)
  18. Theseus

    δαύτος

Under δαύτος in Βικιλεξικό these examples appear: (λαϊκότροπο) και συχνά (μειωτικά): αυτός Δεν ανακατωνόστενε με δαύτον μέρα και νύχτα; (Διονύσιος Σολωμός, Η Γυναίκα της Ζάκυθος) Πώς περνά λοιπόν στο νου της Φρόσως πως μπορεί να βγαίνει στον καθένα όπως φτάσει, σαν και δαύτη; (Κωνσταντίνος...

    covfefe

Sorry to ask but I don't quite understand what is going on here? Is it about δια να/για να; How does this relate to covfefe? Pardon my ignorance but I am unable to make heads or tales of it. I would be grateful for a brief explanation. What are colleagues agreeing or disagreeing about & what...

    meaning of τι το κάνουμε;

In this dialogue, Andreas is trying to guess what an object is. A sort of game of 20 questions. My question is simple and I'm sure it can be simply answered. It is from an excellent site, called kypros.org, from which I am learning to speak Greek. Thanks to this site, I am making very good and...
