I need a second opinion on translating/interpreting the following "The faces through which the load is to be applied shall be flat to a tolerance of 0.1 mm..."
In the same standard, a few sentences below the above sentence, the description includes the following: "The sides of the specimen shall be smooth and free of abrupt irregularities and straight to within 0.3 mm over the full length of the specimen."
All the above is from a European Standard on the compressive strength of dimension stone (διαστασιολογημένοι λίθοι, δηλ. κομμάτια μαρμάρου/γρανίτη κτλ). Last Monday, I got into an argument with a laboratory assessor over the flatness requirements. Originally, I had interpreted it as a flatness requirement of 0.1 mm. After a second reading I changed my mind and accepted it as a tolerance requirement. Unfortunately, the assessor did not agree. Presently, I believe the flatness requirement to be 0.3 mm and the tolerance 0.1 mm.
Any other thoughts?
