This is a question mostly for Altan, but everyone else is welcome to chip in, if you have any ideas :)
On a FB language group we recently discussed the Greek phrase αναντάμ παπαντάμ, which is a corruption of the Turkish phrase anadan babadan (from mother and from father). In Greek, it means πάππου προς πάππου, i.e "for many generations". Some examples:
Until now, I was under the impression that this phrase was not used as such in Turkish, since all the Turkish speakers I had put this question to had never heard it. However, following some more thorough research after the relevant discussion in that group, I came upon the phrase babadan kalma (=left by Father), which means "hereditary, heirloom" and is used as an adjective in Turkish. This phrase has another version, i.e. dededen babadan kalma (=left by Grandfather and Father).
My question therefore is this: how common is this phrase, and does a version of it with the word for "mother" exist in Turkish? (And, most importantly, have I been wrong all these years??? )
Thank you all!
