κουτοπόνηρος -η -ο [kutopóniros] Ε5 : άνθρωπος κουτός, που, επειδή σκέφτεται με ιδιοτέλεια και πονηριά, πιστεύει ότι είναι πιο έξυπνος από τους άλλους και ικανός να τους ξεγελάσει.

Προσπαθώ να εξηγήσω σε αγγλόφωνους το να νομίζει κανείς ότι μπορεί να ξεγελάσει τους άλλους, αλλά να τον παίρνουν χαμπάρι ή να μην τα καταφέρνει. Και έχω κολλήσει, γιατί δεν μπορώ να βρω τη σωστή λέξη (αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν υπάρχει κουτοπονηριά στους αγγλόφωνους).
Έχω βυθιστεί στα λεξικά ψάχνοντας να βρω διαφορές μεταξύ των 20-30 λέξεων που σημαίνουν πονηρός και έχω πελαγώσει.
Καμιά ιδέα;
Cunning και wily είναι ο πονηρός (ο Wile E Coyote μπορεί να είναι ο ορισμός του κουτοπόνηρου, αλλά δεν με βοηθάει).

Επίσης, cunning fool, sly dimwit κ.ο.κ.

Κι εμένα δεν μου έρχεται κάποια μονολεκτική απόδοση όμως στο κατάλληλο πλαίσιο θα μπορούσε να αποδοθεί και με μια από τις ακόλουθες φράσεις:

- too clever by half
- too cunning by half
- too cute by half
- too smart by half

Αν και δεν τις βλέπω να λημματογραφούνται στα λεξικά με τη σημασία του «κουτοπόνηρου», συχνά χρησιμοποιούνται με ακριβώς αυτή τη σημασία.

Ίσως και κάτι με την αντίστροφη διατύπωση ... bungling/inept schemer, bungling/inept conniver (foolish schemer/conniver. etc.).
Πέρασε από το μυαλο μου και το/τα too clever/too cunning/too cute by half, too clever/cunning for their own good, etc. ... αλλά με πρόλαβε ο cougr (as usual).

Quite possibly, pontios, but it could also be analyzed as meaning someone who is primarily dumb or a fool etc. but who also regards himself as being more clever than others and thinking he can outsmart them.

Στην ελληνική γλώσσα μπορεί να έχουμε κουτοπόνηρους από τον πέμπτο αιώνα, αλλά στην Αγγλία όπως φαινεται όχι.

Understood, if we're using that description (that we're referring to someone who is primarily dumb/a fool), but in English there's a contradiction inherent in calling someone "cunning" if they are fundamentally/primary a fool, wouldn't you say ... as in "cunning fool" (wording it this way)?

Admittedly, I probably could've come up with something better, yet although I can understand that some would argue that "cunning fool" is an oxymoron, being cunning doesn't necessarily preclude one from also being a fool. Think of the archetype of the trickster, who is typically depicted as being both cunning and foolish. Wile E. Coyote comes to mind here. (Maybe a few politicians as well).

Also, it is often the case that the term "cunning" is often used to connote and emphasize someone's deceitful and manipulative nature rather than their intelligence or cleverness. Hence expressions such as "cunning but stupid", "foolish yet cunning" "cunning and dumb" etc.

Ή το αντίστροφο:

Μου αρέσει και το too clever by half (επειδή το σκέφτηκα κι εγώ ), αλλά και το too clever for his own good, αν και δεν έχουν κακόβουλη διάσταση.

Είναι όμως κάτι σαν το φιλότιμο. Φυσικά και υπάρχει αντίστοιχο, αλλά δεν είναι υποχρεωτικό να είναι μία λέξη. Και το φιλότιμο και ο κουτοπόνηρος είναι δύο λέξεις σε μία.

Given you brought it up, we may as well mention that "overreach" can also mean to cheat or to get the better of someone by cunning, deceit, trickery etc. It's probably a good candidate for the "μη σταματάτε στην πρώτη σημασία τους" thread.
