  1. Theseus

    as never before

What is the normal or usual Greek for this thread title. I've found these alternatives on glosbe greek:- περισσότερο από ποτέ περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά Τώρα όσο ποτέ άλλοτε όσο ποτέ προηγουμένως όσο ποτέ πριν όσο ποτέ στο παρελθόν. Are all of them possible or are some more likely or...
  2. Theseus

    σιτεμένη

Thanks, SBE. You live and learn, especially me! I had never heard of him or him or his 'groupies' until I followed up this thread. The information you have supplied is invaluable. :)
  3. Theseus

    σιτεμένη

Thanks, both, as ever. I knew σιτεμένο κρέας means 'matured/gamey meat' but its precise nuance in σιτεμένες was unknown in this connection. No wonder the slang.gr example escaped my ability to translate!:o. BTW, is Yalom, Irvin Yalom the emeritus psychiatry professor?
  4. Theseus

    σιτεμένη

What is the meaning of this dialogue in slang.gr under the keyword σιτεμένη (a word I do understand):- — Μανία με τις σιτεμένες ρε μαλάκα, φέρε και καμιά μουνίτσα να χαρεί το μάτι μας!... τη μαμά σου θες να έχεις γκόμενα; — Ίσα ρε Γιαλόμα, εγώ τις γαμώ, εσύ τι ζόρι τραβάς;:mad:
  5. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

The often encountered boastful male super stud, whose tongue outstrips the reality. Thanks, SBE.:)
  6. Theseus

"you stuck your foot in your mouth" or "you stuck your foot in it"

There is a related old proverb--which I like--about someone who always puts their foot in it: από την πόρτα/τη θύρα η αμαρτία...:drool::laugh:
  7. Theseus

    baig/bey & begum/begam/baigum/beygum

Thanks very much, Neikos, for this information. I like the proverb though, foolishly, I didn't connect it with ας με λένε δημαρχίνα nor did I think it was a proverb about vanity. :)
  8. Theseus

    baig/bey & begum/begam/baigum/beygum

Is the Αλη- in Ali Beina anything to do with the famous Ali Pasha of Ioannina, i.e. she means, in effect, 'let them call me the main wife or merely one of the wives In the seraglio of Ali Pasha? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Thanks
  9. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

Γενικός γαμάω, I presume means, 'I screw across the board'. Am I right?
  10. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

Thanks, SBE. But, first, I don't understand ο γ.γ. & second, did you mean the x (noun) in y (location)? I have probably misunderstood you but the examples given follow this pattern? :)
  11. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

Τhanks, all. What is the significance of the reference to γαϊτανάκι, 'Man?
  12. Theseus

that stupid chair, table, lawnmower &c

I like this academic in-jargon, Lefki. It's a habit that can become infectious, particularly if it sounds like an affected stammer. It's not exactly relevant but I loved Eega Beeva in Mickey Mouse when I read the comics, very near the time of the Punic Wars. Eega Beeva had a strange p addition...
  13. Theseus

that stupid chair, table, lawnmower &c

    Thanks, καλέ μου Δρ.:)
  14. Theseus

that stupid chair, table, lawnmower &c

:cool:Brilliant set of answers, 'Man! Swearing, mild or otherwise, is relatively easy until you actually have to use it in this sort of context, then you find that you say something wholly unidiomatic or by a superfluity of γαμημένο's immediately give yourself away as a foreigner. :p
  15. Theseus

that stupid chair, table, lawnmower &c

A simple question. It is very common in the U.K. for a person stumbling into an object to say e.g. 'I hurt my leg on that stupid chair' or to address the object itself, like 'you stupid cat! Get out of my way!' Or 'because of that stupid nail in the door, I've ripped my best trousers'. Is there...
  16. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

Thanks for the cross reference, Sarant. There are some interesting similarly rhyming variants there, like: Πρίμα στη Λίμα (τα περνάμε) [different meaning]; «Όλο νάζι στο Μπουρνάζι» & the English 'first boy in Hanoi'. See also for a recent discovery on my part:-...
  17. Theseus

    πρώτη μούρη

What is the meaning of this phrase metaphorically? 'Top dog'? 'Bee's knees'? Here is one context:- Μετά που πήγε στο πανεπιστήμιο, ξέκοψε από όλους, ξεκίνησε τα γυμναστήρια, έκανε νέους φίλους και το 'παιζε πως στο σχολείο ήταν πρώτη μούρη!
  18. Theseus

The last voyage of Markos Vamvakaris

Thanks, SBE. I didn't quite understand the idiom and its context. Your note makes both clear. :)
  19. Theseus

The last voyage of Markos Vamvakaris

Just a bit of translation: Does tis mean:- They begged us to put them to the end to sing some song. They had the desire to go up on stage. The others dealt them blows...?! The latter phrase is an idiom I don't know.
  20. Theseus

The last voyage of Markos Vamvakaris

Thanks so much, Jim & 'Man. It makes such a difference to understand what people are saying in Greek: one of the main points for me of learning it. Thanks also, 'Man, for the long paragraph written by Giannis Papaioannou. Such talent destroyed in a moment. The whole of this thread has meant...
