Outside the underground station

This is a passage I came across & it seemed a good idea to offer it for translation into Greek by our resident experts. Daeman might just be taking his coffee break! I liked the content & the sort of literary appeal it may present to fellow lexilogists.

"Outside the underground station sat two ruffians with grimy faces & grubby hands. Their hair was dishevelled & their clothes blackened with dirt; one could neither tell their nor their quality. Each of them was biting an apple greedily--who knows in what rubbish they found them?--and were indifferent of the passers-by, who walked up & down in a hurry, looking at them disgustingly.

Suddenly they both jumped up & dived to grab a cigarette-end which a well-dressed slim lady, threw away. Their movement was such that it made the Alsatian of another passer-by jump on them fiercely, thinking they were trying to take a bone or a piece of meat away from him.

The two rogues did not know what to do. They began to cry and scream aloud. But, in the meantime, the owner of the dog made desperate efforts to pull him back and free them. When finally he succeeded, the two ruffians took to their heels without even a protest."

My attempt at the first paragraph! I await pulling apart: I am not yet suffering from αμειλικτοδιορθωνοφοβία.
"Έξω από τον υπόγειο σιδηρόδρομο κάθονταν δυο κανάγιες με τα βρώμικα πρόσωπα και τα λερωμένα χέρια. Τα μαλλιά τους ήταν ξεχτένιστα και τα ρούχα τους έτσι μαυρισμένα με βρώμα που δε θα μπορούσε κανείς να ξεχωρίσει ούτε το χρώμα ούτε την ποιότητα. Καθένας απ' αυτούς δάγκωνε λαίμαργα μήλο--ένας Θεος ξέρει σε τι σκουπίδια τα βρήκαν αυτά--και αδιαφορούσαν για τους περαστικούς, που πηγαινοέρχονταν με σπουδή, κοιτάζοντας αυτούς αηδιαστικά."

I, as a ruthless corrector, and the object of your διορθωτικοφοβία, have nothing to remark on your translation, except on two minor points: με βρώμικα πρόσωπα και λερωμένα χέρια (no definite article), and κοιτάζοντάς τους αηδιαστικά (weak form of the personal pronoun, with the coresponding shift of the stress on the preceding word).

Thanks, Earion. I have rectified these mistakes in my original sketch notebook. I am translating the second paragraph. There are one or two interesting &, to me at least, difficult challenges there--for instance βουτώ can mean 'dive/grab'. So 'dived to grab' could just be βούτηξαν rather than βούτηξαν ν' αρπάξουν.

"Ξαφνικά αναπήδηξαν κι οι δυο τους και χίμηξαν γόπα που την πέταξε μια καλοντυμένη, λεπτή κυρία. Τόσο και ακόμη τινάχτηκαν που έκαναν το λυκόσκυλο ενός άλλου περαστικού ν' ορμήσει άγρια σε αυτούς, νομίζοντας ότι προσπαθούσαν να του κλέψουν ένα κόκαλο ή ένα κομματάκι κρέας."

+1. Or «αηδιασμένα» (adverbial) or «αηδιασμένοι» since it modifies «περαστικοί».

In part 2 I'd prefer «Τινάχτηκαν πάνω» or «Πετάχτηκαν» instead of «Αναπήδηξαν» (which if I had to use, I'd spell it «Αναπήδησαν» because the preposition «ανά» doesn't go well with the colloquial «πήδηξαν» imho). And another detail: I wouldn't use «ν' ορμήξουν» but «να ορμήξουν». Elision is more common when the same vowel is present in both words, although we do say and write e.g. «θα 'θελα», but it's rarely used for α + ο, nowadays at least.

Eν τω μεταξύ, όμως, ο ιδιοκτήτης του σκύλου έκανε ανέλπιδες απελπισμένες{much better} προσπάθειες να τον{It's a he here: ο σκύλος} αποσύρει τραβήξει και να τους απελευθερώσει. Τελικά, όταν τα κατάφερε/κατόρθωσε είχε επιτυχία{two clicks higher register than necessary}, το έβαλαν στα πόδια χωρίς ούτε κάν ένα{not necessary} παράπονο." Or: το έβαλαν στα πόδια χωρίς να πουν κουβέντα / χωρίς να κάνουν κιχ.

It's a pity you can't use our "third dimension". I had put many more comments in them and I'm not sure the text is very clear as it is now.
