Ας ξεκινήσουμε από το τι σημαίνει within an inch.
Εύκολο: πολύ κοντά, παρατρίχα, στο τσακ. Άλλωστε, η ίντσα είναι με το ζόρι δυόμισι πόντοι όλοι κι όλοι (2,54 για την ακρίβεια).
Έτσι, όταν διαβάζει κανείς, για παράδειγμα, the kid came within an inch of being run down by a truck καταλαβαίνει ότι το παιδάκι λίγο έλειψε να το πατήσει φορτηγό.

Τι σημαίνει όμως within an inch of one's life;

Ας πάρουμε για παράδειγμα τη φράση He was flogged within an inch of his life

Καθώς δείχνουν τα πράγματα, η φράση στην κυριολεξία της μιλάει για μαστίγωμα ή ξυλοδαρμό μέχρι τα πρόθυρα του θανάτου. Τόσο άγριο, δηλαδή, ώστε με όρους χώρου, η ζωή που σου απομένει να χωράει μέσα σε κάπου δυόμισι πόντους. Όχι και πολύ, εδώ που τα λέμε.

He was flogged within an inch of his life = τον μαστίγωσαν σχεδόν μέχρι θανάτου.

Όπως πολλές κυριολεκτικές φράσεις, έτσι κι αυτή πήρε την μεταφορική χροιά της.
