The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice. It is the oldest American federal law enforcement agency, which was created by the Judiciary Act of 1789 during the presidency of George Washington. The Marshals Service is attached to the Judicial branch of government, and is the enforcement arm of the federal courts. It is the primary agency for fugitive operations, responsible for prisoner transport, the protection of officers of the court, and for the effective operation of the judiciary. The Marshals Service operates the Witness Protection Program, and serves federal level arrest warrants.

Είδα σε υπότιτλο την απόδοση "Αρχιδικαστής". Όπως λέμε "καμία σχέση".

Σε άλλες χώρες υπάρχει ιδιαίτερος κλάδος δικαστικής αστυνομίας (εδώ νομίζω ότι περιορίζεται μόνο στις φυλακές). Αν πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να το εξηγήσεις, τότε δικαστικός αστυνόμος, θα έλεγα. Δυστυχώς δεν παίζει ο «δικονόμος» (κατά το στρατονόμος, ναυτονόμος κλπ).

Το Σώμα θα αποδιδόταν προφανώς Ομοσπονδιακή Δικαστική Αστυνομία. Για να πω το κρίμα μου όμως, το "ομοσπονδιακός δικαστικός αστυνόμος" ( ή αστυνομικός; Μήπως μπλέκουμε με βαθμούς; ) θα ήταν καλό για επεξήγηση, αλλά δεν θα είχε το αμερικανικό άρωμα του "ομοσπονδιακού μάρσαλ".

Τον διασημότερο κινηματογραφικό US Marshal, τον Σαμ Τζεράρντ (που κυνηγάει, ως γνωστόν, φυγάδες...), βλέπω ότι τον λένε είτε σκέτο "αστυνόμο" είτε "ομοσπονδιακό αστυνόμο". Ανάλογα και με τις ανάγκες βέβαια, το "δικαστική αστυνομία" για όλο το σώμα καλό το βρίσκω (π.χ. όταν χτυπάνε μερικοί Marshals μια πόρτα και φωνάζουν "US Marshals!").

Όταν βλέπουμε marshal, κοιτάμε μήπως προηγείται το U.S. ή ο τίτλος αναφέρεται στις ΗΠΑ, γιατί άλλο U.S. Marshal, δηλαδή ομοσπονδιακός αστυνόμος / σερίφης, κι άλλο Field Marshal, δηλαδή στρατάρχης.

US Marshal:

The Marshals Service is responsible for apprehending wanted fugitives, providing protection for the federal judiciary, transporting federal prisoners, protecting endangered federal witnesses, and managing assets seized from criminal enterprises.

Field Marshal:

The United States has never used the rank of field marshal; however, General Douglas MacArthur was field marshal of the Philippine Army from August 24, 1936, until December 31, 1937.

On December 14, 1944, Congress created the rank of "general of the army," a five-star rank equivalent to that of field marshal in other countries. Two days later, George Marshall was promoted to this rank, becoming the first five-star general in American history. A Washington columnist suggested (with tongue in cheek) that Marshall disliked the plan because five stars was the rank of field marshal and the Chief of Staff could then be addressed as "Marshal Marshall."

Στις ΗΠΑ, λόγω της ήδη διαδεδομένης χρήσης του όρου «marshal» από την ομοσπονδιακή αστυνομία, προτιμήθηκε ο βαθμός να ονομαστεί General of the Army (Στρατηγός του Στρατού).

Το παρακάτω μού το έστειλαν, αλλά δεν μπορούμε να το αμφισβητήσουμε. Στο τρέιλερ της καινούργιας ταινίας του Σκορσέζε με τον Λεονάρντο Ντι Κάπριο (Shutter Island, Το νησί των καταραμένων) ο U.S. marshal, αντί για «αστυνόμος» ή «σερίφης», μεταφράζεται «στρατάρχης». ... Στρατάρχη που να επιδεικνύει το σήμα του δεν έχω ξαναδεί.

Κι άλλο μπάτσος, άλλο δικαστής. Μαρσάρω, μαρσαλάρω.

Περί μαρσαλαίων και μαρεσάλων λεξιλογήματα ...

Ως περιληπτική περιγραφή τής υπηρεσίας αυτής και του χαρακτήρα της, μου άρεσε πολύ η εξής φράση από το άρθρο τής Βικιπαίδειας:

The Marshals Service is attached to the Judicial branch of government, and is the enforcement arm of the federal courts.

Θυμήθηκα έτσι τον όρο «δικαστική αστυνομία», και μου ακούστηκε εξόχως ταιριαστός για μια τέτοια υπηρεσία· μετά διάβασα πώς χρησιμοποιείται στην Ευρώπη και απογοητεύτηκα. (Επίσης, police judiciaire [FR>EL].)
