toxin = A poisonous substance, especially a protein, that is produced by living cells or organisms and is capable of causing disease when introduced into the body tissues but is often also capable of inducing neutralizing antibodies or antitoxins.

toxic = noun A toxic chemical or other substance.
adj. Capable of causing injury or death, especially by chemical means; poisonous: food preservatives that are toxic in concentrated amounts; a dump for toxic industrial wastes.

Chemicals and toxins is wrong when talking about the environment.
Chemicals and toxics is right when talking about the environment.

Wikipedia says:

ΟΧΙ χημικά και τοξίνες όταν αναφερόμαστε στο περιβάλλον. Μόνο όταν αναφερόμαστε στον οργανισμό μας!

Όμως η εναλλαξιμότητα των όρων (environmental) toxins, (environmental) toxic substances, (environmental) poisons κτλ. από έγκυρες πηγές είναι τόσο διαδεδομένη που πιστεύω ότι κάποια μέρα τα λεξικά θα πρέπει να αναθεωρήσουν τους ορισμούς τους.

Ούτε το Wiktionary δεν έχει υποχωρήσει ακόμα! Μόνο η Webster's Concise Encyclopedia διευρύνει τη σημασία:

Πάντως στο χώρο των ιατρικών επαγγελμάτων, όπου ανήκω κι εγώ, δεν νομίζω ότι γίνεται σύγχυση των όρων. Άλλο η τοξίνη (πχ Βοτουλινική τοξίνη, δηλαδή BOTOX) και άλλο ο πολύ γενικότερος όρος "τοξική ουσία" ( όπως και "τοξικά" σχόλια μερικές φορές...:) )

Και στον τομέα της ιατρικής, όροι όπως το «ingested toxins», «hepatotoxins», «renal toxins» κτλ. συχνά παραπέμπουν σε φάρμακα και άλλες χημικές ουσίες, όπως για παράδειγμα την ακεταμινοφαίνη, τα βαρβιτουρικά, την γενταμυκίνη, την σισπλατίνη, το τριχλωριούχο αρσενικό κ.ο.κ.

Σημειωτέον ότι υπάρχει και ο όρος toxicant, κατ' αντιστοιχία προς το intoxicant (παραπέμπει και στο toxic pollutant), που σημαίνει την τοξική ουσία που παράγεται από τον άνθρωπο (κάτι σαν το αντίθετο της τοξίνης δηλαδή). Στα κείμενα της ΕΕ αυτό μεταφράζεται τοξικό προϊόν, σωστό μεν αλλά μάλλον γενικό.
