Διαπίστωσα ότι αυτό το πολύ συνηθισμένο ρήμα δεν υπάρχει στα περισσότερα δίγλωσσα λεξικά. Στον υπότιτλο, εκεί που το άκουσα, έδιναν «αμφισβητώ» σαν μετάφρασμα και δεν ταίριαζε άσχημα. Αλλά ειδικότερα (ορισμοί και παραδείγματα από πολλές και διάφορες πηγές):
1. to criticize, assess, or correct somebody or something after an event is over and the outcome is known; to criticise or correct by presuming to have a better idea, method, etc.
- It’s easy to second-guess the team’s coach — but let’s face it, he made big mistakes.
- Of course it’s easy to second-guess the management of the election campaign, but I do think serious mistakes were made.
- Please don’t try to second-guess the procedure that we have already refined and adopted.
αμφισβητώ τις ενέργειες / αποφάσεις, επικρίνω εκ των υστέρων / κατόπιν εορτής, κάνω κριτική εκ του ασφαλούς, κάνω τον έξυπνο...
2. to predict a course of events, an outcome, or somebody’s intentions from a position of relative ignorance
She’s always trying to second-guess the boss.
It’s not for us to second-guess the court’s decision — we’ll just have to wait and see.
προβλέπω (πώς θα κινηθεί κάποιος), μαντεύω
3. second-guess oneself: to self-criticise and correct one’s actions or talents, especially by hindsight.
Once she began listening to her instincts and didn’t second guess herself the entire time, her artwork improved noticeably.
