Whereas cards and devices connect to only one side of a backplane, a midplane has cards and devices connected to both sides. This ability to plug cards into either side of a midplane is often useful in larger systems made up primarily of modules attached to the midplane. Midplanes are used in computers, mostly in blade servers, where server blades reside on one side and the peripheral (power, networking, and other I/O) and service modules reside on the other. Midplanes are also popular in networking and telecommunications equipment where one side of the chassis accepts system processing cards and the other side of the chassis accepts network interface cards.

Μια και στη μνήμη του πελάτη το backplane μεταφράζεται "πλακέτα βάσης", σκέφτομαι να αποδώσω το midplane ως "ενδιάμεση πλακέτα".

Δεν βλέπω γιατί να διαφωνήσω — αφού μάλιστα δεν υπάρχει μονολεκτική απόδοση του backplane.

Για το backplane, η «βασική πλακέτα» υπάρχει και στο ΙΑΤΕ, ενώ η Microsoft δίνει βασική μονάδα (;) και η ΕΛΕΤΟ έχει:
backplane = ραχιαίο επίπεδο, πίσω επίπεδο (γαλλικά: plaque de raccordement arrière, fond de panier, plaque arrière, panneau arrière). Βλέπουμε ότι οι Γάλλοι δεν αγαπούν το «επίπεδο» — αλλά ούτε το «βασική».

Πάντως, δεδομένου ότι το midplane χαρακτηρίζεται από τη δυνατότητα σύνδεσης / προσαρμογής παρελκομένων και καρτών επέκτασης σε αμφότερες τις πλευρές του, δεν καταλαβαίνω γιατί να το πούμε «ενδιάμεσο» και να μην παίξουμε με κάτι σε «αμφι-». :) Εντέλει (στη χειρότερη), αν backplane = πλακέτα βάσης, τότε midplane = μέση πλακέτα, όχι;

In maths it means the normal plane that cuts a segment in the middle.
