έξαλλος -η -ο: 1. (για πρόσ.) που έχει χάσει την αυτοκυριαρχία του λόγω έντονου συναισθήματος: Είναι / έγινε κάποιος έξαλλος από το θυμό / τη χαρά / τον ενθουσιασμό του. Πετάχτηκε πάνω έξαλλος αναποδογυρίζοντας την καρέκλα του. Tο έξαλλο πλήθος δεν άφησε τίποτα όρθιο. Έξαλλη κατάσταση, που χαρακτηρίζει τον έξαλλο άνθρωπο.

είμαι / γίνομαι έξω φρενών, εξοργίζομαι σε μεγάλο βαθμό, αγανακτώ. κάνω κπ. έξω φρενών, εξοργίζω κπ. σε μεγάλο βαθμό, κάνω κπ. να αγανακτήσει.

Thanks, as usual, 'Man. I knew the literal term, which is, I think, πυρηνική τήξη. But the metaphorical use is now very common particularly in soaps.

Σημασία 1η: παραληρώ από το θυμό μου.
Σημασία 2η: παθαίνω νευρικό κλονισμό (από υπερκόπωση) || λιώνω από υπερκόπωση (more informal)

Ι find it difficult to use the word as in the first example, Theseus, perhaps because the two meanings correspond to two very different reactions and in Greek they are expressed by two completely different words. Also, melting and down imply depression to me, rather than explosion. But that's just me.

Thanks, Earion for the two/three idioms and SBE for her comments. In reply to her comment about sense 1, I suppose when there is a literal meltdown, the consequences are explosive and extensive. However, the term is generally used of depression.

Αντιλαμβάνομαι ότι στο πλαίσιο του αυτισμού η πλέον διαδεδομένη απόδοση του meltdown είναι ο όρος κατάρρευση, όμως κττμγ ίσως ταιριάζει περισσότερο στο shutdown.
