Xia-dynasty skywatchers would indeed have seen Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all rise with the waning crescent Moon on March 3, 1953 B.C. Stationed together between the western fish of Pisces and Aquarius, the Water Bearer, the five planets visible to the unaided eye and the Moon escorted the stars of Pegasus, the Winged Horse, out of the east. Two days later the dark new Moon initiated a new lunar cycle that coincided with a time of year close to what the Chinese traditionally considered the beginning of spring.
Five planets was first political, then calendrical. In conjunction, they were believed to signal - and therefore justify - dynastic change. Gathered together like that, the "Five Pacers," as Tang dynasty astronomers later styled them, put the old order on notice.
