Άκουγα στις ειδήσεις ένα απόσπασμα από την πρόσφατη ομιλία του Μπόρις Τζόνσον για τη συμφωνία με την ΕΕ και απόλαυσα τη διατύπωση με το «jot and tittle» — παρμένο κατευθείαν από την κλασική παιδεία, τη Βίβλο, τα ελληνικά και τα λατινικά μαζί.
Το jot, όπως και το iota, είναι από το δικό μας το (γ)ιώτα, που κι αυτό προέρχεται από το γράμμα yod του εβραϊκού αλφαβήτου, το πιο μικρό γράμμα απ’ όλα, αυτό.
Το tittle πάλι είναι σαν το title, από το λατινικό titulus, που έδωσε και σε εμάς τον «τίτλο». Η πρώτη σημασία της είναι «κεραία» — η τελεία, πάνω από το λατινικό i, κάποιο σημαδάκι που αλλάζει την προφορά, κάποιο δυσδιάκριτο σημείο στίξης. Όπως και το jot χρησιμοποιείται μεταφορικά για να δείξει τη μικρή ποσότητα.
Συνδυάζονται στην έκφραση not a jot or tittle ή (με καταφατική σημασία) every jot and tittle.

One possibility is that it refers to the decorative crowns placed atop some Hebrew letters, this would not work for Jesus, however, as such markings only began to be used in the later part of the first century. Burkitt feels it would have been waw, the second smallest letter. Gundry notes that it could also have referred to the small projections that separate certain letters. It could refer to accents in Greek but more likely hooks on Aramaic letters, (ב) versus (כ), or additional marks such as crowns (as Vulgate apex) found in Jewish Bibles.
