A deep embarrassment for Pindar personally must have been the fact that his city of Thebes, proud and ancient, but fatally exposed to the invader from the north, took the Persian side in the second invasion: and, although a Theban contingent served with the small Greek force under Leonidas at Thermopylae, the city became Mardonius' headquarters during the winter of 480/479, and its forces fought bravely on the Persian side at Plataea. After the Greeks led by the Spartan king Pausanias had defeated the Persians, they punished Thebes by the execution of some of its leaders.
