In physical cosmology, cosmic inflation, cosmological inflation, or just inflation is the expansion of space in the early universe at a rate much faster than the speed of light. The inflationary epoch lasted from 10[SUP]−36[/SUP] seconds after the Big Bang to sometime between 10[SUP]−33[/SUP] and 10[SUP]−32[/SUP] seconds. Following the inflationary period, the universe continued to expand, but at a slower rate.
