Θησέα, στο πρώτο παράδειγμα νομίζω ότι θα ταίριαζαν λέξεις/φράσεις όπως :

ράκος, χάλια, μαύρα χάλια, ένα μάτσο χάλια, διαλυμένος, ερείπιο, τελειωμένος

Στο δεύτερο παράδειγμα ίσως : χαμένη υπόθεση, καμένο χαρτί

Άλλες αποδόσεις για το basket case θα μπορούσαν να είναι :
ξεγραμμένος, ξοφλημένος, ανίατη περίπτωση...

Και σίγουρα θα υπάρχουν κι άλλες.
