I'd argue that there are definitely more connotations to it. One could, for instance, have a comforting drink to assuage their grumpiness or sadness and to cheer themselves up. In the long list of synonyms to the term "comforting" you'll find words such as cheering, gladdening, inspiriting...

Some more food for thought: Would you call a comforting drink, say a mug of hot chocolate on a chilly night, after a bad day at the office, a "παρηγορητικό ποτό" or is that too funereal sounding?

@ Mod Almighty (I like that name):-) Re:# 23 There are numerous references to comfort food being a source of solace. It's as if it's one of it's leading defining features. That's why I didn't mind translations utilising "παρηγορία " and related terms. In any case I understand the point you make.

Εμένα πάντως μια χαρά μου φαίνεται το φαγητά της παρηγοριάς. Θα έλεγα ότι η απόδοση που έχει προταθεί στον τίτλο ταιριάζει περισσότερο στα mood foods.
