Landlord

I was just looking at some of the treads on this site about "Landlord" (some of which I started) and wondering if we can have a deeper discussion about why there would not be a clearer equivalent in Greek? The concept of someone who owns real estate and rents it out is certainly very very common- so I wonder why there would not be a noun for the person doing it? "Εκμισθωτής" may be the word used in a lease but if I want to say something like "I don't like being a landlord" or "I wouldn't want to be a landlord" or "I wouldn't want to have a landlord/ tenant relationship with this person" I'm having trouble finding the right phrase.

Any thoughts about this would be appreciated.

Όταν κάποιος σου νοικιάζει π.χ. ένα διαμέρισμα, συνήθως λέγεται «σπιτονοικοκύρης»/«σπιτονοικοκυρά». Άρα «δεν μου αρέσει / δεν θα ήθελα να είμαι σπιτονοικοκύρης», θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς.

Σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις μπορείς να χρησιμοποιήσεις το πιο γενικό «ιδιοκτήτης». (Δεν νομίζω ότι ταιριάζει το «σπιτονοικοκύρης» για εκείνον που εκμισθώνει π.χ. ένα χωράφι.)

In English the term landlord is used in a broader sense than Greek, for example both for someone who owns properties and for someone who owns land and rents it out to farmers. In Greek you would say γαιοκτήμονας (landowner) for someone who owns land. The owner of a property is simply ιδιοκτήτης (ακινήτου) (homeowner).
Since we don't have a feudal system in Greece, farmers generally own the land they work on and it is implied that a γεωργός is also a γαιοκτήμονας.

I believe this is basically what the OP was after...

I have myself occasionally said something along the lines of:

Δεν μου αρέσει / Μου προκαλεί αμηχανία / Με ξενερώνει η ιδιότητα / ο ρόλος του σπιτονοικοκύρη

Or:

Η σχέση εκμισθωτή-μισθωτή είναι ουσιαστικά σχέση εξουσίας και "δεν το μπορώ"

Καταλαβαίνω την απορία σας. Στα ελληνικά, η λέξη "Εκμισθωτής" είναι η πιο κοινή για να περιγράψει κάποιον που εκμισθώνει μια ιδιοκτησία. Αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι η λέξη "landlord" στα αγγλικά έχει μια πιο ειδική και διαισθητική αίσθηση, που δεν αντικατοπτρίζεται απόλυτα στην ελληνική λέξη "Εκμισθωτής". Για τις φράσεις που αναφέρατε, μπορείτε να πείτε:

• "Δεν μου αρέσει να είμαι εκμισθωτής."
• "Δεν θα ήθελα να είμαι εκμισθωτής."
• "Δεν θα ήθελα να έχω μια σχέση εκμισθωτή-εκμισθωτέα με αυτό το άτομο." Είναι πιθανό η αίσθηση της λέξης να εξελίχθηκε διαφορετικά στα δύο γλωσσικά συστήματα λόγω των κοινωνικών και ιστορικών παραγόντων της κάθε χώρας. Ελπίζω να βοήθησα στην κατανόηση του θέματος!
