σπλάχνο

Hi!
How should I consider this word, at here? "Emotion, agitate, etc."? Or like P. Bien's "compassion".

You've actually got the English in that image. Here's the Greek:

Σπλάχνια is ευσπλαχνία. Compassion.

Σπλάχνο, on the other hand, is your insides in the plural (σπλάχνα, originally σπλάγχνα) and hence in the singular one's offspring.

'Compassionate' is a non-existent verb in my opinion. 'Has pity on' or 'feels compassion for' would be a better translation.

That's the one at the bottom! Never got that far. Here's the complete passage:

The same compassion and kindness (expressed in action) for everything that suffers. Both chose lepers, the deepest and most horrible abysm of wretchedness and pain; one white lepers, the other the black lepers of Africa. I said compassion and kindness, but I should have said Metta; only this Buddhist word faithfully expresses the sentiment engendered in these two brothers by human suffering. In kindness and compassion there are two: the sufferer and he who compassionates the sufferer.

The OED has the verb compassionate, but it should now be marked as obsolete. The ODE has dropped it.

"Some people are so adjective that they verb nouns." :-) Others verb names, too, some of them proper-nouned verbs already. As for me: Will Smith words for cash.

For compassionate as a verb, my trusted friend GWord has: λυπούμαι, συμπονώ, ευσπλαχνίζομαι. I might add συναισθάνομαι.

Synonyms for σπλάχνα would include σωθικά in Greek, and innards and entrails in English, both literally and figuratively, as well as viscera and the guts.

Κοριτσάρα, κοριτσάρα, κοριτσάρα μου, είσαι το σπλάχνο, το μεράκι κι η λαχτάρα μου

Hence the KJV, the 17th century translation of the New Testament Greek text of Philippians 1,8: μάρτυς γάρ μου ὁ Θεός, ὡς ἐπιποθῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ἐν σπλάγχνοις Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ:-'For God is my witness, how I long for you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ...'. More gutsy than the modern 'For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.' And we still have 'gut feelings'. (More modern versions tend to tone down the earthiness of the older. Compare the older version of the raising of Lazarus: 'Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.' Two modern translations: 'Lord, by this time there will be a stench'/'Sir, there will be an odour').:twit:
