The tool here refers to a pair of side-cutters (which was/were smuggled in) .. which would help the two detainees to escape the prison (presumably, it will allow them to cut through the wire mesh of the chain-link fence).

Η πλάστιγγα μου γέρνει ελαφρώς υπέρ το enhance.

Also, would you use "chances of escape were..". or "chance of escape was.."?

correction - presumably, it would allow them to cut through (not will) .. and υπέρ του enhance.

Όλα παίζουν. Το «Their chances to escape», ελάχιστα — δεν θα το έλεγα.
Το chances of escaping θα το έλεγα μόνο αν έπρεπε να χρησιμοποιήσω το escape σαν ρήμα, δηλ. με αντικείμενο.
Το chances of escape είναι κλισεδάκι.


Τώρα, οι διαφορές improve και enhance είναι περισσότερο θέμα collocations, δηλαδή ο χρήστης ή ο μαθητής δεν μαθαίνει τι να πει επειδή έχει ανακαλύψει κάποια θεωρία αλλά επειδή τα έχει συνδυάσει με συγκεκριμένες συνάψεις.

Επειδή υπάρχουν πολλές αποδεκτές επιλογές, δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολο.

Το μόνο που έχω αποκλείσει οριστικά είναι το "chances of escaping" - συμφωνώ με τον nickel - χρειάζεται ένα αντικείμενο για να ολοκληρωθεί - i.e., their chances of escaping "something" .. e.g., their chances of escaping jail.
By the same token, perhaps, re:chances to escape, because we come across it (chance, singular) in phrases like .. "last chance to escape", "no chance to escape" (the collocation argument?), and also because it too may need an object .. as in, chances to escape "something", I've gravitated towards "chances of escape".


το enhance, νομίζω ( σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις, τουλάχιστον) χρησιμοποιείται για να περιγράψει μια κατάσταση που έχει βελτιωθεί, με την προσθήκη ενός νέου συστατικού... π.χ. το αλάτι βελτιώνει την γεύση της σούπας, δηλαδή την γεύση που ήδη είχε η σούπα, χωρίς να προσθέσει μια καινούργια γεύση.

Εάν το εργαλείο εδώ (το side-cutters) θα μπορούσε να θεωρηθεί ως νέο συστατικό, κατά τον ίδιο τρόπο, και λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι το chance, εδώ, δεν είναι απτό (ίσως ο dr. έθεσε μια καλή ερώτηση, και ίσως χρειάζεται να γίνει μια διαφοροποίηση, εδώ; ).
το improve είναι η ασφαλέστερη επιλογή.. το enhance μπορεί να προσφέρει κάτι επιπλέον, αλλά δεν είμαι σίγουρος;

They had the tool in their possession, which meant their chances of escape were (now) greatly increased; but by the same token, wouldn't it be true to say that their chances of escape would be greatly increased ( now that they have the invaluable "escape" tool in their possession)?
-"would have been" sounds like a hypothetical ..almost as if it's predicated on something (else), i.e., it's not as definite (sounding) as "would be".
"were" sounds like the safest choice.
