Not have a leg to stand on is to be in a situation where you have no - often, if not mainly - legal protection/ where you cannot prove something:-
--The problem is, if you don't have a witness, you don't have a leg to stand on.
--I haven't even got the receipt to prove where I bought it, so I don't have a leg to stand on.
The worst one I've ever heard was from a former headmaster at a school where I taught who told the students that, since the construction of a new footbridge across a very busy and dangerous road, they must no longer try and cross the road to the sports fields except by the footbridge:-
--I warn you that you must now use the new footbridge on all occasions that you go to Archdeacon meadow [the name of their sports field], because if you get knocked over by a car you don't have a leg to stand on! :clap:twit:
Is this dreadful pun possible in Greek?!!
