yap and bark

In modern Greek it doesn't seem that there are two verbs for 'to bark', one for small and another verb for large dogs. In English we have 'yap' for the shrill bark of small dogs and 'bark' for medium and large dogs. γαβγίζω seems to serve for both types in Greek. I suppose you could use κάνω γαβγιζμαδάκι for ´yap'. Latin has gannio for 'yap' and and 'latro' for 'bark'. But does any modern Greek dialect distinguish between the two sounds?

I'm not sure if there's a specific term for it in Greek, although "γαυγισματάκι" or "μικρό γαύγισμα", might do the trick.

On a side note, even though I'm by no means an authority on these matters, I believe Theseus is actually right in spelling the word with a β: γάβγισμα is what you'll find in ΧΛΝΓ for example, not γαύγισμα.

Then again, cougr is of course right in pointing out the correct suffix: γαβγισματάκι, and definitely not γαβγισμαδάκι…

Also, it goes without saying that the limited palette of onomatopoetic words (and especially verbs) in the Greek language has already been touched upon:

Rasslar, είναι το σουηδικό ρήμα που συνάντησα σε βιβλιαράκι που διαβάζω, σε περιγραφή για τον οξύ ήχο που κάνουν τα μαχαιροπίρουνα κατά τη διάρκεια της λάντζας, όταν χτυπάνε είτε μεταξύ τους, είτε στα τοιχώματα της γούρνας του νεροχύτη. (Για τους κροταλίες, εντωμεταξύ, έχει άλλο ρήμα: skallrar)...

Από κακή συνήθεια πάντα το γράφω "γαυ-". Φταίει το βιβλίο που είχα διαβάσει κάποτε, το "Όταν γαυγίζει ο ντουνιάς"

Ευχαριστώ πολύ μ_α_α_. Γαβγισμαδακι ήταν τυπογραφικό λάθος. Φυσικά, ήξερα, βλάκας που είμαι, ότι —άκι όχι —άδι ήταν η συνηθισμένη υποκοριστική μορφή. Τον Όμηρο τον παίρνει λιγάκι ο ύπνος! Ευχαριστώ για τον σύνδεσμο με τις ονοματοποιητικέ λέξεις.
