A calcareous sandstone crust which forms near groundwater level on tropical beaches by calcium carbonate precipitation from sea and/ or fresh water. A sufficient quantity of calcium carbonate in the sea water is necessary for cementation of the sand grains, and this may be derived from algae, coral, and shells. Beach rock is common on the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
