Again an idiom whose clear meaning seems to be obvious--'we began to sing'. In this passage, some Greeks from London are on a trip to Stratford on Avon. 'As soon as we had taken our seats on the train, -τα βάλαμε στα τραγούδια. Is this idiom common & is it an extension of the common idiom το βάζω στο πόδια;
By the way, the passage begins:
Είναι χαράματα. Η εγγλέζικη (is αγγλική wrong here?) πρωτεύουσα κοιμάται κάτω απ' το πέπλο της καταχνιάς. Το μεγάλο ρολόγι της Δημαρχείας χτύπησε εφτά βαριούς χτύπους.
Is it possible that το ρολόγι της Δημαρχείας refers to Big Ben?
A lot of niggling points here but maybe they are worthy of discussion. I am pleasantly surprised that points I have almost been embarrassed to put forward are answered fully by colleagues without a suggestion of patronising or condescension. I am always grateful for that.:)
