από την άλλη μεριά

The context is about a man, clearing the pathways έπρεπε ν' ανοίξω δρόμους & digging his car out of the heavy snow. When he had managed to dig out από τη μια πλευρά το αμάξι, he says, προχωρούσα προς τα κάτω. Then he noticed, θαρρείς από διαίσθηση his woman neighbour staring at him fixedly from behind her curtain. He felt a chill passing through him but he turned back immediately. Η πειραχτική φωνή του Οδυσσέα ακουγόταν από την άλλη μεριά. What does the phrase mean here--'from the other direction?'
