This evening's passage is reasonably straightforward apart from these sentences. The context is about a lad who had had money stolen from his purse. A mysterious character (ο άνθρωπος), as I understand it, says this:-
-Δεν έχεις χρήματα, είπε ο άνθρωπος, θαρρείς κι ήταν βέβαιος εκ των προτέρων.
Does εκ των προτέρων mean 'with hindsight'? 'You might have the impression that he was certain in retrospect/with hindsight'.
The lad, when asked by the man,is sure he had a 100 drachmas:
-Σίγουρος. Κάποιος θα μπήκε μέσα την ώρα που κοιμόμουν. Κοιμήθηκε άλλος κανείς;
What quite does this mean? 'Did anyone else sleep?' sounds an odd phrase?
The lad, I think, says that he will leave his identity card, while he goes off to get some money. The reply is:-
-Ταυτότητα; τι να την κάνω την ταυτότητα; Ύστερα, ποιος μου λέει πως θα ξαναγυρίσεις;
Μη ανησυχείς, μου την έχουν ξαναφτιάξει τη δουλειά, δεν πιάνουμαι πάλι κορόιδο.
Does the first phrase in bold mean: What should I do with the identity card? As for the second sentence in bold, I have no idea what it means? 'To play a trick'?
-Πάει να πει πως κάπου ξενύχτησες.
Does the last phrase mean 'it all amounts to the fact that/it proves that'?
I hope these questions are not too bitty but the piece is too long for an arduous transcription.:down:
