The concertmaster/mistress (from German Konzertmeister) is the leader of the first violinorchestra. In the UK, the term commonly used is leader. Any violin solo in an orchestral work is played by the concertmaster (except in the case of a concerto, in which case a guest soloist usually plays).

The concertmaster makes decisions regarding bowing and other technical details of violin playing for the violins, and sometimes all of the string players; and is in charge of leading the orchestra in tuning before concerts and rehearsals and other technical aspects of orchestra management.

Στα ελληνικά ο όρος για το "πρώτο βιολί" της ορχήστρας είναι εξάρχων. Ο Μπαμπινιώτης και το ΛΚΝ δεν τον έχουν, πάντως.

Και αφού εκφράσω θερμότατες ευχαριστίες σε αυτήν την πριν-από-σας-για-σας ανάρτηση, άλλη μια απορία: η γυναίκα λέγεται εξάρχουσα; Πρόσφατα συνάντησα τον όρο στα πορτογαλικά που, παραδόξως, χρησιμοποιούν την ιταλική λέξη spalla (που στα ιταλικά λέγεται επίσης και primo violino, πρώτο βιολί).

Βεβαίως, εξάρχουσα.

Για την ακρίβεια, απο τα όσα ιταλικά καταλαβαίνω (και από τα αντίστοιχα βικιάρθρα στα αγγλικά και γερμανικά ;)), spalla στα ιταλικά είναι μια ειδική περίπτωση συμπρωταγωνιστή στο θέατρο (στο ιταλικό βικιάρθρο δεν βρίσκω αναφορά σε ορχήστρες, ούτε σύνδεση με την πορτογαλική σπάλα και τα πρώτα βιολιά)...

Ναι, αλλά δεν είναι η σπάλα που ψάχνουμε. Η σπάλα που ψάχνουμε είναι δυο κουκκίδες παρακάτω εδώ, και δεν έχει δικό της άρθρο:
spalla (musica) o "violino di spalla" è il violino principale ("primo violino") in una sezione di violini (violini primi, violini secondi) di un'orchestra.

Καλημέρα. Μια και αναφέρατε την εξάρχουσα, έχει πλάκα η συζήτηση στα αγγλικά κατά πόσο η γυναίκα πρώτο βιολί πρέπει να είναι concertmaster ή concertmistress. Σε μια συζήτηση, στο violinist. com, φαίνεται να τάσσονται υπέρ του πρώτου. Λέει ένας: «We tried 'concertmistress' decades ago, and it never quite rang true and has some negative and sexist associations». Ένας άλλος γράφει: «My understanding was that a 'concert-mistress' is the lady twenty years younger than your wife whom you take to concerts because you found out too late that the aforesaid spouse can no longer stand being in the same room as you, never mind in an adjacent seat for a couple of hours. What happens afterwards depends largely on how well the orchestra played». Και ένα άλλο μέλος θυμάται: «This brings to mind a story I heard once, though: the concertmaster of some orchestra was terrible, but she was the conductor's girlfriend — so everyone referred to her as the 'concertmattress'».
