... unsupported, flimsy, untenable are all semantically related. "aid and abet" is a legal term which covers all aspects of assisting (which is closer to "aiding") and inciting/encouraging (which is closer to "abetting", I think) a crime. We can look it up, anyway.

Exposure in the army = combat exposure or combat trauma (or being exposed to something traumatic while serving in the army) that can lead to PTSD? Decoyed into the army = tricked or "inveigled" (that one's for nickel's edification) into the army. ;-)

I used simpler words that were synonyms of the more difficult ones to make it more accessible. I was trying to tie everything together ... starting from anathema = something repulsive that you'd want to stay clear of, and ending with an accessible and readily understand word - affront - that...

I think in all the examples that cougr quoted, anathema has more or less the same meaning as "affront"? affront noun: affront; plural noun: affronts an action or remark that causes outrage or offence. "he took his son's desertion as a personal affront" Israeli annexation: an anathema/an...
