Αλήθεια πώς θα αποδίδατε το cruciverbiste; Σταυρολεξόφιλος;

Συγγνώμη που γύρισα το ερώτημα στα αγγλικά, αλλά μια και οι Εγγλέζοι ξεκίνησαν το αστείο με τη λατινική λέξη... Παραθέτω σημείωμα του Μάικλ Κουίνιον από το 2002 και το λήμμα του OED από το 2006:

CRUCIVERBALIST/ˌkruːsɪˈvəːbəlɪst/ A compiler or solver of crossword puzzles.

If you encounter the clue “crossword puzzle fan (14 letters)”, this is the answer. It seems to have appeared in English about 1980 (the first reference I can find is to the Compleat Cruciverbalist of 1981 by Stan Kurzban and Mel Rosen, subtitled “how to solve, compose and sell crossword puzzles for fun and profit”). However, Stan Kurzban tells me that Mel Rosen had encountered the word some years earlier in the title of a directory of crossword puzzle notables that was not widely circulated. Whatever its origin, cruciverbalist has spread into the wider language as a result of their efforts to the extent that it now appears in some larger recent US dictionaries. The word is a modern mock-Latin invention, being a translation back into Latin of the English crossword (using Latin crucis, cross, as in words like cruciform, plus verbum, word, as in verbose or verbatim). There is also cruciverbalism, for the art of crossword compilation or crossword fandom generally, but that is much rarer.

cruciverbalist, n.
Brit. /ˌkruːsɪˈvəːbəlɪst/, U.S. /ˌkrusəˈvərbələst/
[‹ classical Latin cruci-, combining form (in e.g. Crucisalus, name of a slave, lit. ‘cross-dancer’) of cruc-, crux cross (see cross n.) + verbalist n., after crossword n.]

A person who compiles or solves crossword puzzles; a crossword enthusiast.
  • [1939A. Waugh 23 Aug. in A. Waugh Fathers & Sons (2004) ix. 245 Unravelled clues myself have missed (You champion crux-verbalist!), Our host's illimitable wit.]
  • 1971 Crossword Summer 2/3 A succinct word to describe people who regularly attempt to solve crossword puzzles. A number of subscribers, including Jonathan Crowther, one of our crossword contributors, proposed ‘cruciverbalist’, while several others suggested ‘cruciverbian’.
  • 1975 Games & Puzzles Feb. 28/2 That would take a cruciverbalist with a deep lexicographical devotion another incarnation or two to produce.
  • 1981 S. A. Kurzban & M. Rosen (title) The compleat cruciverbalist: or, how to solve and compose crossword puzzles for fun and profit.
  • 2005 Guardian 13 Sept. ii. 29/3 At the present time, it appears that Sudoku is stealing the spotlight when cerebral exercise is recommended. But have no fear, cruciverbalists! There is no contest.

Και στα ελληνικά; Ο σταυρολεξάκιας είναι η λαϊκή εκδοχή. Για να βλογήσουμε τα γένια μας θα λέγαμε ο σταυρολεξιλόγος. Κανονικά το αγγλικό αντίστοιχο θα ήταν ο σταυρολεξιστής. Αλλά και ο σταυρολεξόφιλος καλό ακούγεται. Εσείς τι λέτε;

Εμάς τι μας εμποδίζει να τους διαχωρίσουμε με το δις λεγόμενο σταυρολεξολύτης και το άπαξ σταυρολεξογράφος;

Και ο δαεμανικός ορισμός του cruciverbalist: αυτός που σε σταυρώνει με την πάρλα του, τις ρητορείες, τον βερμπαλισμό του.

Για τον σταυρολεξομανή θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε και σταυρολεξόβιος (πρβλ μηχανόβιος);

Tελικά βλέπω να προτιμάω το σταυρολεξόφιλος για λήμμα σε λεξικό. (It sounds better! - ça sonne mieux!).
