Good morning, Altan.

I like Peter Bien’s recent translation. It is literal and exact:
“Keep a tight grip on your brakes, dear friend, lest they shatter!”

The neuter το φρένο comes from Italian freno and means “brake”, literally and figuratively.

Οι φρένες, on the other hand, is the modern plural of the feminine φρην, and that's the word we use with the meaning of “mind, wits”. E.g.

Είναι έξω φρενών.
Δεν έχει σώας τας φρένας.
Φρένιαξε.
φρενοκομείο
φρενοβλαβής
εξωφρενικός
ξέφρενος
σχιζοφρενής
φρενίτιδα
