arch consciousness

The play with names* can also be seen as a sign of a rather arch narrative self-consciousness, increasing the strange dissonance in Cyropaedia between hard-headed political analysis and a sense of detachment in space and time from the Greek world known to Xenophon and his readers.

arch 1

1 A curved symmetrical structure spanning an opening and typically supporting the weight of a bridge, roof, or wall above it.

arch 2

Deliberately or affectedly playful and teasing.

Arch-Consciousness, I, a term used by Troxler to denote immediate knowledge in opposition to reflecting and discursive thought

Καμιά ιδέα;

https://www.lexico.com/definition/arch-

The terminological neologism arch-narrative is defined as a story or a text that has a fundamental meaning in terms of the development of a specific culture (its subsystem, area, etc.), it contributes to a creation of a specific style and is based on a certain ideological archetype (Horálek 1979: 20). At the same time, it seeks to articulate, in a fundamental way, a certain sense of life (in the sense of Heidegger’s attunement), the concept of the Lifeworld and one’s presence in it (Dasein), as well as to illustrate the basic existential strategies that seem to be the most meaningful in such a conceived world. The concept of an arch-narrative/arch-text combines the semanteme of developmental primordiality (in this sense, it refers to an ‘arch-story’ or ‘proto-text’) and/or the semanteme of (stylistic, paradigmatic, epistemological, typological) distinctiveness (Čechová 2017: 278).

Aυτό το "archetypal narrative self-consciousness" .... :)

I'm just guessing ... I think "arch" is short for "archetypal," as nickel has mentioned.

I think it has something to do with a narrative device that's often used in storytelling (some satirical books, films, etc..) where the story is similar to or parallels an archetypal (or well-known) epic, or myth/fable, etc ... and there's this "intertextual resonance/intertextual echoing" going on.
The arch story or proto text refers to this original/archetypal myth/epic/fable (or text thereof)... that you're being reminded of.

This style is "self conscious" in the sense that it is deliberately letting the reader or viewer in on the joke ... in a scene, the film/stage actor may even look directly at the camera or directly at the audience and wink, etc.. and the audience would understand the connotation/connection, as the arch story would be familiar to them.
