The current financial crisis has thrown terminology from the business pages onto the front page of newspapers, with jargon now abounding everywhere from the watercooler to the back of a taxi.

Here is a guide to many of the business terms currently cropping up regularly, as well as some of the more exotic words coined to describe some of the social effects of the credit crunch.

Readers can send any terms they need explaining using the form at the bottom.*

Fakeaway
A home-made, belt-tightening version of a takeaway - think, a curry made with a jar of sauce, bag of rice and a packet of poppadoms from the supermarket.

Staycation
Staying at home for your holiday in a bid to save money.

Δηλαδή, όταν, αντί να πας διακοπές, μένεις και ψήνεσαι στο σπίτι σου, που έχει γίνει φούρνος, μπορούμε να το πούμε fornication;

Αυτά τα κάνουν οι recessionistas (A person who manages to look fashionable on a tight budget)!

Toxic debts
Debts that are very unlikely to be recovered from borrowers. Most lenders expect that some customers cannot repay; toxic debt describes a whole package of loans where it is now unlikely that it will be repaid.

Debt repackaging and subprime crisis

High-yield bonds can also be repackaged into collateralized debt obligations (CDO), thereby raising the credit rating of the senior tranches above the rating of the original debt. The senior tranches of high-yield CDOs can thus meet the minimum credit rating requirements of pension funds and other institutional investors despite the significant risk in the original high-yield debt.

When such CDOs are backed by assets of dubious value, such as subprime mortgage loans, and lose market liquidity, the bonds and their derivatives are also referred to as toxic debt. Holding such "toxic" assets has led to the demise of several investment banks and other financial institutions during the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-08 and led the US Treasury to offer to buy those assets in September 2008 to prevent a systemic crisis.

What are "toxic" debts?

"Toxic" debt has become shorthand for the various asset classes hard hit by the financial crisis, such as sub-prime mortgages – the original "toxic" asset.

The word "toxic" caught on because these assets have proved financially ruinous. They have seen their valuations cut and buyer demand dry up.

The holders of the debt have in many cases fallen into a loss and been forced to raise emergency capital. The worst hit UK lender so far has been Royal Bank of Scotland, which has taken £5.9bn of writedowns and has had to raise £12bn from shareholders.

How much "toxic waste" is there?

Nobody really knows...
