Translation Cloud LCC

* Translators are paid at the rate of between $0.01 and $0.03 per word depending on how common the language is (we pay the highest value in your language pair). You must have a valid method of payment entered in your account settings to be able to receive payments.

Note: Translators will only be compensated for correctly translated and approved segments. All payments are made in U.S. dollars.

* Here is why we pay those rates:
- We’re paying for proofreading, not translation.
- You don't have to submit invoices nor bid for jobs, saving you time.
- You don't have to purchase any expensive software, saving you money.
- You work from home and all you need is a browser and internet connection.
- The work is so efficient that a regular translator can process translations at a rate of roughly $15-20/hour. That's a very competitive wage!

* When is a translation "approved" on Translation Cloud?

Once other proofreaders and an editor has approved your translation, the translation is marked as approved. The money will be added to your accumulated “Owed amount” on the main page of Translation Cloud.

* When will you NOT be paid for a translation task?

If you submit a segment with any error, even a small one such as improper spacing between characters, it is marked as an incorrect translation and you will not be paid. Additionally, your rating and Translation Rank will be negatively affected.

Note: You can review your rejected segments and learn from your mistakes, but you cannot appeal them.

* Your Rating and Cheating - TranslationRank™

We take our work seriously. Work through Facebook or any other web application is no excuse for doing poor quality work or cheating.

Although we give you the freedom to translate at your own pace and do not yet enforce any qualification tests, our dedicated team of professionals screens every translator in real time as they work. Thus, if you attempt to cheat and/or use system in an inappropriate way, you will be banned from the system. No pending payments will be made to you.

If you translate without errors, your rating will go up. If you make mistakes, your rating will go down and you risk being removed from the system.

Dear Sirs

The Greek Association of Translators, Editors, and Proofreaders feels the need to urge you to reconsider your practices regarding your collaboration with translators as well as the process of translation you follow.

After reading the Getting started section of your website, we wish to stress the following points:

• You ask for volunteer translators, although there are qualified schools all around the world that offer the required knowledge and skills to someone who wants to be a professional translator. You obviously use other people’s work for free in order to maximize your company’s profits by selling their product to your clients.

• You tell translators that they will be proofreading machine translations, while we all know that machine translation has not yet reached an acceptable level to be merely proofread and finished.

• You claim that you give translators the freedom to translate at their own pace, perhaps forgetting that a few clicks earlier your instructions clearly state that a translator has to proofread a phrase in up to ten minutes.

• You treat translators as if they are dogs under training. You throw them a line or two, when it comes to large projects, for …security reasons! You degrade the translator’s craft, you undermine the process of translation, and you do not ensure quality to your client; a text does not consist of mere fragments, but conveys a meaning and a form as a whole.

• You demand perfection, otherwise translators are not paid. People work to earn a living, not to gamble. Working hard does not mean that the result will be perfect, otherwise proofreaders and editors -two highly respected professions that link authors to their readers for centuries now by taking care of the slightest detail of the text, as to both context and form– would have never been needed.

• You demand perfection, yet your rates are as low as they can get. You simply underrate the translator’s work in order to achieve the highest profit margins possible, without taking under consideration that translators are humans who need to live respectably nor that your clients are paying for professional translators who respect their craft, not hobbyists or desperate people who happen to know a couple of languages and want to try their luck at another "clever" company that tries to utilize a world wide range market without adequate restrictions which would protect workers and professionals’ rights. Therefore, an income of $15–20 per hour, as you state, is definitely not assured.

• Your application requires wide access to Facebook accounts. In other words, you ask for full access to your collaborator’s social, personal, and professional networks; it's only fair to assume that you want to fully monitor them and also use their data.

• Last but not least, you advertise that your rates are competitive by stating that no invoice is needed. Well, isn’t this …illegal?

Thank you for your time and we hope that you will reconsider your practices and start appreciating translators as human beings, workers, and professionals.

Ιδού τέλος τι μας απάντησε χωρίς χρονοτριβή ο ιθύνων νους της εταιρείας:

Hello,

First of all, it is a big honor to hear from your organization. I am humbled by the fact that our invention has touched so many existing translation organizations and professionals. It shows the real power of its industry disruption potential, the outcome we aimed to produce.

Second, I've read all your arguments, and they are reasonable. However, they apply to "professional translators" which like you said have chose this field as the profession. They most likely went to school to study language and acquired several industry certificates. But those are not the people we've built this tool for. It's built primarily for merely bi-lingual people who are not doing it for a living, but rather as an occasional hobby while they are on facebook. That's why the strict rules, timers and all sorts of checks and balances come into place as we'are dealing with increased orders of magnitudes unheard of previously. I believe that you have a shallow understanding of the platform, because you only read the online power point presentation which covers only 10% of what we are doing. I'd recommend first to register as a full user and the PDF instruction manual will be emailed to you. It will help to answer all your subsequent questions and give you a richer understanding.

So, to keep matters short, our tool is not for professionals and we are not going to devalue professional's work. We only do it for a complimentary purposes and yes, if we can earn a living by doing it, that would be the intended outcome. After all, the sustainability of any organization is directly proportionate to its ability to generate revenue whether from direct clients or donors. I think you'd agree on that.

Thank you for voicing your opinion.

I wish you all the best.

Καλά τούς τα ψάλατε, αλλά θα υπάρξει και συνέχεια, όχι μόνο σε σχέση με αυτούς. Η ελάχιστη (οικονομική) επιτυχία σε αυτό το επίπεδο και θα γεμίσει ο τόπος από τέτοιες κομπίνες, το αμέσως επόμενο βήμα μετά τη μηχανική μετάφραση. Μήπως θα πρέπει να φτιάξουμε από τώρα την εταιρεία που θα διορθώνει τις φαιές μεταφράσεις του νέφους;

Κι εγώ τις ίδιες απορίες με τον νίκελ έχω και δεν καταλαβαίνω τι ακριβώς κάνει αυτή η εταιρεία. Μου φαίνεται περισσότερο σαν εταιρεία που προσπαθεί να δοκιμάσει την αποτελεσματικότητα των αυτόματων μεταφράσεων και ακολουθεί τη μέθοδο δώστε στο κοινό να βρει τα λάθη για να διορθώσουμε το πρόγραμμα. Κατάλαβα καλά;

We fire our translators! Yes, instead of assigning the whole project to a single translator or several, we decided to build a modern system which would allow us to utilize all our available linguists at the same moment. This way, we don’t rely on anyone. There is a huge redundancy built-in and this also results in huge turnaround improvements. If a single linguist can translate at a rate of 2,000 words per day, the new approach lets us to reach a 10 times faster turnaround. Even the 100 time faster turnaround is feasible for some of the most common languages such as Spanish, Russian or Portuguese. To put it into perspective, that’s roughly 800 pages per day!

I guess with each problem, there comes the innovation. It’s the lifelong process of dialectics. You explore the world, you face the problem, you find the solutions. Being reliant on any single individual is a retiring way of doing business. We are building the modern and efficient cloud based solutions that are powered by lots and lots of people. Instead of teaching individuals in colleges on how to do translations, we are teaching them online en-route. It’s the way Translation Cloud is going to be. It’s the future. Let’s fire all the translators and then re-hire them back in the new capacity. The renaissance of language industry starts with us.

Ας σημειωθεί τέλος ότι ο ιδιοφυής αυτός μπίζνεσμαν δυσαρεστήθηκε που είδε δημοσιευμένο σε φόρουμ το περιεχόμενο της απάντησής του στην αρχική μας επιστολή: "I do not appreciate your attempt to defame our company", μας γράφει, και μας καλεί να "reconsider this posting as it is offensive and discriminatory".

It really is beyond me how anyone can possibly consider his own words as an "attempt to defame" said person's company. It is also beyond me how it is heavenly possible that these same words can be considered as "discriminatory".

I should think that it is discriminatory to treat non-qualified translators as a second-rate workforce, paying them one sixth to less than one tenth (!) of what professionals should be earning. Professionals who, if I may add, charge more because they declare their earnings to their country's tax department. And here is where I start wondering...

  • I wonder, for instance, if these "people who are doing it as an occasional hobby" know that they have to declare their income, even if it comes from abroad.
  • I wonder if they actually realise (or are even informed, for that matter) what it means for them to be subject to a tax audit in countries suffering from the recession, such as Greece or Spain, and what the penalties are for not declaring one's income because they are only working "for a complimentary purposes" (sic).
  • I wonder if the end client will actually profit from this abysmally low cost, or if the "renaissance of language industry" (how do they come up with these things?) will be the one pocketing the considerable difference.
  • I wonder if the end client is informed by all the Michelangelos of Translation out there of how bad the final result will be, as it doesn't need much common sense to understand that a good translation requires much more than average knowledge of a source language.
  • And I finally wonder if the end client actually realises how poorly a bad translation will reflect on his or her business.
Or if the non-qualified translators out there realise the legal implications of knowingly undertaking something as difficult and as important as translation is. Let's hope none of us go into surgery in an operating room where all the manuals have been translated by "merely bi-lingual people who are not doing it for a living".

To take this a bit further, the founder is also the owner of this agency http://www.translation-services-usa.com/management.php. How interesting would it be if it could be established that the work assignments for Translation Services USA LLC are sourced to Translation Cloud LLC (their "crowdsourcing" solution) and then to unfortunate skilled or unskilled translators without going through the official inland revenue channels. American companies are obliged to submit W8 forms for non-US residents... soooooo....... this is definitely a matter for the IRS.

In that case, one could imagine a scenario where a professional agency would market its products to business entities, such as, say, clinics, based on quality-oriented characteristics, and then outsource these same products to... what was it? Ah, yes, "merely bi-lingual people who are not doing it for a living, but rather as an occasional hobby while they are on facebook".

And the client would knowingly accept it? I sure hope they have good liability insurance...

Δεν είναι νέα, είναι όλα προμεταφρασμένα, προφανώς μηχανικά. Θυμίζω:

"We’re paying for proofreading, not translation." - "All translators work as proofreaders in Translation Cloud."
"[...] you can start correcting short segments of text. Some segments will require editing while some will be already correct. You need to review each and every segment carefully and make sure it is correctly translated."

'Cheating translators' is obviously cheating translators, users and clients, despite the disclaimer:

$99 for such crap, as if we couldn't find tons for free.

Wow! I tested the tool earlier this evening, but I didn't realise it was for sale! I just thought it was a fun application to experiment with, since it is obvious that all it does is compare the text you type with a translation that is probably generated by some online free machine translation tool.

Come on, $99.00, seriously? Anyone can do that for free! All you need is a computer, an internet connection, and some text processor that allows you to compare documents.

Δύσκολο είναι να στείλουμε από ένα ηλεμήνυμα ο καθένας στους κατάλληλους αποδέκτες;

Προς αποφυγή παρεξηγήσεων: Αυτό που πωλείται προς $99 δεν είναι το κολπάκι που συγκρίνει δύο μεταφράσεις. Αυτό που πωλείται είναι μια ονομαστική λίστα ανέντιμων μεταφραστών. Ή, για να ακριβολογούμε, μεταφραστών που κάποιος κάποτε τους κατηγόρησε για κάτι.

Sorry, I didn't get it. I thought they were asking for money to compare human to machine translation. But what they are doing is actually a lot worse:
But this could be a thing of the past if you use the wisdom of the Translator Blacklist. Our list includes all the names of human translators who have ever been accused of cheating by:

Using machine translation.
Providing poor quality translations.
Not delivering translations on time or at all.
Pay attention to the wording: who have ever been accused of cheating, and not found guilty of it.

In my book (and in all legal books, for that matter), in order to accuse someone even for spitting on the sidewalk, you need proof. In this case, in order to actually prove that someone has indeed cheated in the foregoing manner, you would need information such as:
  • Project (hence, client) details.
  • Translator's details
  • The specifics of the contract signed between the translator and his or her client
  • The exact way in which the translator has cheated.
This would mean that the person providing such information would need to be a project manager working for a large translation firm, or the end client themselves. In the first case, providing such information could correspond to a serious breach of confidentiality - do clients know that their documents are used in such a way? In the second case, I find it hard to believe that any end client would gladly give away such information to someone who would then use it to make money.

What is even harder to believe is that translators "accused" for cheating would know about this and would not press charges - I know I would. I mean, even if a translator actually was ever late in delivering a project, this could have happened for any number of reasons such as, I don't know, health problems?

:eek:

Ωραία. Τότε να βρούμε τα ονόματα των μεταφραστών που απασχολεί η εταιρεία, να τους καταγγείλουμε καμιά εκατοστή φορές τον καθένα στην "πρωτοποριακή" ιστοσελίδα τής ανώνυμης και χωρίς καμιά συνέπεια ρουφιανιάς, να δούμε: θα εμφανιστούν στη μαύρη λίστα;

Όλοι έχουμε ράμματα για γούνες πολλών και μάλιστα με τεκμήρια, όχι αυθαίρετες καταγγελίες, αλλά θεωρούμε αντιδεοντολογικό να τα κοινοποιούμε στον οποιονδήποτε, πόσο μάλλον να τα εκμεταλλευόμαστε για ίδιο όφελος.
Νομίζω ότι η αμερικανική δικαιοσύνη θα έχει πολλά να πει γι' αυτό το ζήτημα.
