When the cult of Asklepios was introduced to Rome in 293 B.C., the only healing rites practised by the Romans involved the dedication of anatomical votive terracottas. Asklepios arrived at the peak of this phenomenon, but his cult was distinctly Epidaurean and came equipped with an Epidaurean set of rituals – including the incubation of the ill (in this case, those with the pestilence) to achieve the dream-sleep necessary for communing with the deity. At no time did an Epidaurean cult receive anatomical votive terracottas in Greece, and this remained true in Italy.

The Romans translated εγκοίμησις into incubation, although incubo is 'lie on', hence its use for sitting on eggs. The Greek κοιμ- of κοιμώμαι (sleep) is a variant of κειμ- of κείμαι (lie).
