We don’t know for sure where it comes from, but it doesn’t seem to be as old as Shakespeare’s day. It was first recorded in the late 1700s, in the sense of an odd or eccentric person. Later it became another word for a joke or a witticism and only about the middle of the nineteenth century did it take on the modern meaning of a more-or-less formal set of questions.

Το παραμύθι έχει σαν προέλευση ένα λεξικό προφοράς του 1836 (το «επονομαζόμενο Walker Remodelled), όπου γράφει: «All these words [εννοεί το Quiz και τα παράγωγά του], which occur only in vulgar or colloquial use, and which Webster traces to learned roots [όπα, καβγάς με τον Γουέμπστερ], originated in a joke: Daly, the manager of a Dublin play-house, wagered that a word of no meaning should be the common talk and puzzle of the city in twenty-four hours; in the course of that time the letters Q,u,i,z were chalked or pasted on all the walls of Dublin with an effect that won the wager».

Η ιστορία δεν ξαναέκανε την εμφάνισή της στην έκδοση του 1840. Ο Κουίνιον επαναλαμβάνει την ιστορία με δικά του λόγια και καταλήγει με το σκωπτικό σχόλιο: «The story is best viewed through the bottom of a glass of something Irish».
