I'm copying a larger portion of the phrase here, for reference purposes:

Την πρώτη φορά που τον είδα να μπαίνει στο σπίτι, έσυρα φωνή∙ έτσι με τις φαρδιές βράκες του, με το κόκκινο ζωνάρι, φεγγαροπρόσωπος, γελαστός, σαν αγαθός νεροπαππούλης μου φάνταξε, σαν ένα στοιχειό της γης, που τώρα, νά, βγήκε από τα περβόλια

Hi. Judging from "στοιχειό της γης", I can only guess he is using this term as a description of some water sprite, some gnome associated with water. This is not a common term. I haven't even found "παππούληδες" used in connection with fairies and sprites.

It seems that Sotiris Skippis has used νεροπαππούλης before Nikos Kazantzakis.

Hi, Altan. I'd seen that as one of the few Google hits, right after Report to Greco. I don't, however, think that Kazantzakis was basing his use of the term on the character in Skipis' little known play. It is more likely they are both making use of a folklore term that we just have not located in the older books made available to us on the web.
